HP EliteBook 1040 G3 vs HP EliteBook 1040 G4 – what are the differences?

After we presented to you the key specifications of HP EliteBook 1040 G4, we thought you would be interested to find out what differs this laptop from its predecessor HP EliteBook 1040 G3.

Starting off with hardware options, you can configure your G3 with up to 6th generation Intel Core processors, while its successor – the G4, sports up to a 7th generation one. As for the available graphic cards, the former comes with Intel HD Graphics 520 as opposed to Intel HD Graphics 620 in the latter. This means that if you choose G4, you will get increase in the performance but nothing marginal. Storage-wise, both laptops come with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB SSD.

Moving on to the display, it has a diagonal of 14 inches for both of them, however the G3 sports either Full HD or QHD TN panel compared to an IPS option with 4K UHD or Full HD in its successor. In terms of overall dimensions, the two devices are almost identical – 337 x 235 x 16 mm vs 329 x 233 x 16 mm so there is no significant difference here. The weight of G4 has been slightly reduced – it is now 1.35 kg.

There is also difference in the battery capacity – you are presented with 45.6Wh compared to 67 Wh 6-cell Li-ion battery. As for the operating system, both laptop configurations can work with Windows 10 Pro but G3 also feature Windows 7 Pro, while G4 – Windows 10. And last but not least, the notebooks sport almost the same connectivity options except for the single USB 3.0 Type-C in G3 as opposed to two USB 3.1 Type-C in G4.

Just to note: The reason the HP Elitebook 1040 G4 does NOT have Windows 7 Pro is simply due to the lack of hardware support from the Kaby Lake Architecture for that specific OS, which applies to ALL systems under the 7th Gen CPU and later.
