HP ProBook 450 G9 – Top 5 Pros and Cons

Making laptops is a balancing act most of the time, as you have to maintain certain profit margins while offering value and a tempting price tag. HP manages to do this pretty well with its ProBook series. Today we have the ProBook 450 G9, a new 15.6-inch Alder Lake-powered laptop with good efficiency and security, but being part of the so-called mid-range ProBook lineup, it doesn’t cost that much.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the HP ProBook 450 G9.

HP ProBook 450 G9: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP ProBook 450 G9

1. Input devices

The keyboard of the ProBook 450 comes with spill resistance, a backlight, long key travel, and clicky feedback, so typing feels great and comfortable. Above the board, there’s also a large speaker grill, housing a stereo setup. The touchpad sways a bit to the left and has a smooth finish, while also being very responsive and accurate.

2. Upgradeability

The laptop offers two SODIMM slots for DDR4 memory, as well as two M.2 slots for Gen 4 SSDs. If you buy your laptop with an LTE card, it will cost you one M.2 slot.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to upgrade the HP ProBook 450 G9.

3. I/O

The port selection includes a total of three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a LAN port, an HDMI 2.1 connector, an audio jack, and a SIM card tray.

4. Battery life

With a 51.3Wh battery pack and an efficient Core i5-1235U, the ProBook lasts for 12 hours and 13 minutes of Web browsing, or 8 hours and 28 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP ProBook 450 G9

1. GPU performance

The MX 570 discrete GPU that we have here comes with a 30W power limit, however, the laptop doesn’t use it at all, maxing out at 21W during our GPU stress tests. Compared to the Vostro 16 5620, we’re getting significantly lower clock speeds.

NVIDIA GeForce MX570GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 2 min)GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 30 min)
HP ProBook 450 G9832 MHz @ 71°C @ 21W738 MHz @ 71°C @ 20W
Dell Vostro 16 56201268 MHz @ 79°C @ 30W1253 MHz @ 81°C @ 30W

This does lead to less performance in benchmarks, as the Vostro scores 9%, 7%, and 2% higher in the 3DMark Time Spy, Fire Strike, and Wild Life benchmarks. It’s also 7% quicker in Unigine Superposition.

Results are from 3DMark Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

The results are from 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited. Higher is better.

Results are from the Unigine Superposition benchmark (higher the score, the better)
