日本Inside Dell XPS 13 (9350, Skylake) – disassembly, internal photos and upgrade options
Not much has changed over the last generation XPS 13 that we reviewed a few months back but we found two interesting things in the Skylake revision. The first one is that the new XPS has slightly bigger battery capacity and the other one is that it comes with a different M.2 SSD and the latter is worth considering for sure.

1. Removing the bottom piece
Just like the XPS 15, the new XPS 13 needs only a few screws to be removed. Start with the one in the open and then proceed with the one that hides under the XPS cap. Then you can just pry up the whole bottom cover.
2. What we found inside
The cooling system remains unchanged as well as the overall position of the hardware. And since this is a 13-inch ultrabook, you don’t have the option of a 2.5-inch drive slot but you get a speedy M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD instead. That’s right, the new Skylake generation offers even faster 2280 SSD than its predecessor. To make things clear, the old XPS 13 had a B&M M.2 SSD working with the old AHCI controller but now the NVMe support should improve the overall performance significantly. The SSD we found inside was Samsung 256GB NVMe OEM SSD in 2280 flavor with M-edge key connector.
Also, the battery is now slightly bigger. The old one was rated at 52Wh but after disassembling this version, we found out that it’s 56Wh. We expect similar, if not better, battery performance than its old sibling.

I just installed a 1TB Sandisk X400 SATA into my 9350. No work, no settings, just booted to Win10 USB, setup took somewhere between 5 & 10 min (wish I had looked). Only challenge was, 4k res in DOS mode was so small I had to use a magnifying glass to get through the setup initial screens.
FYI 9350 has both SATA & PCIe controllers; M.2 socket supports both B & M key edges – the X400 is B & M.
Hey Heinrich, how is the performance of the X400 1TB m.2? I have been considering it but can’t find any reviews at all.
Tempted to go with that or just stick with a Samsung Evo 500GB
