Snapdragon 650 (+Adreno 510) vs Snapdragon 808 (+Adreno 418) – performance, benchmarks and temperatures

snapppp

It is thanks to Sony Xperia X that we had the chance to test for the first time the Snapdragon 650 mobile chip. The latter is meant for devices that are between the mid and high-end. This is why we decided to compare it to another Qualcomm CPU which fits in this category. We are talking about Snapdragon 808, present in Nexus 5X. We shall compare their potential, computing and graphics performance, as well as exterior temperatures after continuous workloads. For this article, we’ve used a modification of Snapdragon 808 – MSM8992, which offers six cores. The first four are Cortex-A53, clocked at 1.44 GHz. They are meant for everyday tasks and are easy on the battery. Additionally, there are two Cortex-A57 cores, ticking at 1.82 GHz. These are more powerful and are engaged when the workload is higher. Snapdragon 808 is a 64-bit mobile CPU manufactured through a 20 nm technological process. It is characterized by 4K video recording and playback, support of Ultra HD displays, Quick Charge 2.0 for fast charging, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, as well as LTE Cat 9 connectivity, which ensures a download speed of up to 450 Mbps. It must be also mentioned that there is the Adreno 418 GPU to take care of graphics-related tasks.

Similarly, Snapdragon 650 features six cores – the first four are the more economical Cortex-A53, whereas the other two are the more powerful Cortex A-72, ticking up to 1.8 GHz. Snapdragon 650 is a 64-bit mobile chip manufactured through a 28 nm technological process. It is characterized by the support of up to Quad HD displays, 21MP cameras and 4K video recording and playback. Additionally, it offers the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology that ensures quick battery charging. Also supported are Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, Bluetooth Smart 4.1, NFC, and LTE Cat 7 connectivity, which brings up to 300 Mbps download and up to 100 Mbps upload speeds. The GPU, in this case, is Adreno 510.

Benchmark results

We put the two models to a total of eight tests tests that examine both computing (first four tests) and graphics performance (remaining four tests). You can find the results in the table below.

Exterior temperatures

Apart from performance, we also test the extent to which the two chips lead to exterior overheating. For this purpose, we use the Epic Citadel app that simulates 3D gaming for several hours. Immediately after that, we measure maximum temperatures in three different sections of the smartphones’ back. We did not register worrying values in either of the two, but it’s interesting that Xperia X with Snapdragon 650 showed identical temperatures all along its back, whereas in Nexus 5X the hottest point was around the camera, while the other parts of its back were considerably cooler. The two photos below display the particular maximum temperatures registered in our test.
