Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT buy the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is a true desktop replacement. The 17-inchers are (maybe) the best possible way to enjoy a desktop-like performance alongside portability. In our case, the GX701 is configured with an Intel Core i7-9750H and a full-blown NVIDIA RTX 2070 – a true monster that can handle the heaviest gaming titles with decent FPS values.

This laptop is a very interesting machine because it combines powerful hardware that is fitted in a slim body (especially for that kind of screen size) and the weight is on the low side too – a big notebook that isn’t too heavy to carry it from one place to another. If you haven’t already checked our in-depth analysis regarding this device you can find it here.

3 reasons to BUY the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701

1. Aluminum build

The build quality of this thing is one of its biggest advantages – aluminum is utilized for the whole body and lid. The machine looks and feels premium complemented by the thin bezels around the display. The profile is just 18.6 mm and the weight is 2.60 kg – pretty good numbers for a big machine.

2. Long battery life

When you have a big display that has a high refresh rate, most of the time you can’t expect good battery life. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 proves us wrong with its 7 hours of Web browsing and almost 6 hours of video playback which is a decent result for that kind of laptop.

3. Color-accurate 144Hz screen

The IPS screen (AUO B173HAN04.0 AUO409D) is a 17.3″ panel with 144Hz refresh rate, comfortable viewing angles, great contrast ratio – 1320:1, and a 92% sRGB coverage. On top of that, the display is PWM-free and we recorded Fall Time + Rise Time of 10 ms which is a respectable result. Keep in mind that there are two other display options – a 240Hz panel and a 300Hz one.

2 reasons not to BUY the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701

1. The keyboard isn’t that good

The laptop has a “keyboard forward” which means that the whole deck is placed very close to the palm rest area which isn’t very comfortable by the way. The keycaps have some really short travel and that makes the keyboard uncomfortable for gaming. The touchpad has a dedicated button that turns it into a NumberPad.

2. The CPU throttles below its base clock after a long load

Sadly, under prolonged and heavy loads, the CPU clock drops below its base frequency – with 2.3GHz frequency it’s 300 Mhz down below the base mark of 2.6GHz.

Average core frequency (base frequency + X); CPU temp.
