Helio X25 (+Mali-T880) vs Snapdragon 650 (+Adreno 510) vs Snapdragon 820 (+Adreno 530) – performance, benchmarks and temperatures

Two of the leading mobile processor manufacturers – MediaTek and Qualcomm, are facing each other again today. In our case, we will put to tests Helio X25, Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 820 chips with the help of Meizu Pro 6, Sony Xperia X and ZTE Axon 7 respectively. We would like to first have a look at their specifications and then juxtapose their results from various benchmarks, and conclude with surface overheating tests. You can check the three models over here:

Snapdragon 650 is a mobile chip by Qualcomm, which is available in Sony Xperia X. The 64-bit processor, manufactured through a 28 nm technological process, features six cores – the first four are the more economical Cortex-A53, whereas the other two are the more powerful Cortex A-72, ticking at up to 1.8 GHz. It boasts the support of up to Quad HD displays, 21MP cameras and 4K video recording and playback. Additionally, it offers the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology that ensures quick battery charging. Also supported are Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, Bluetooth Smart 4.1, NFC, and LTE Cat 7 connectivity, which brings up to 300 Mbps download and up to 100 Mbps upload speeds. The GPU, in this case, is Adreno 510.

The next Qualcomm representative – Snapdragon 820, is 64-bit, manufactured through a 14nm process. It is available in ZTE Axon 7 and has four Kryo cores – two ticking at up to 2.15 GHz and other two – at up to 1.6 GHz. Additionally, the mobile chip supports LTE Cat 12/13 providing download speed up to 600 Mbps (Cat 12), and upload speed up to 150 Mbps (Cat 13). Moreover, the specs are supplemented by Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11ac 2×2 MU-MIMO, support of 4K screens, up to 25MP cameras and 4K video recording. Also available are Quick Charge™ 3.0 and WiPower for quick and wireless charging. Here the available GPU is Adreno 530.

Temperatures

Apart from performance, we also tested the three chips for potential overheating issues with the help of the Epic Citadel app. The latter allows us to simulate several hours of gaming. Immediately after this, we measure the temperatures in three sections of the smartphone’s back. Neither of the three phones displayed worrying values but ZTE Axon 7 definitely beat the other two devices. The photos below display the registered temperatures in the three sections of each smartphone’s back.
