ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

Laptops annually get more expensive, both due to inflation, and new CPUs coming out every year. This hit AMD big time in 2022, as their two latest CPU series, Ryzen 5000 and 6000 provided only incremental upgrades to performance.

This means that, despite there being new CPUs on the market, you wouldn’t really notice the impact of the new chip vs the old one. What this means is that laptops with the Ryzen 5000-series can be a very good value for money, thanks to both performing well and costing less.

This leaves us with the ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502), which is a new 2022 laptop but uses the older Zen 3-based CPUs. If you think that older hardware would be a dealbreaker, ASUS has included a very capable OLED panel upfront so that you’re well compensated.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502).

ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop is well built, having an aluminum lid and a plastic base. The whole device gets an antimicrobial treatment, making the laptop a good option for hospitals and the healthcare industry. For a 15-inch device, it’s pretty portable, weighing 1.80 kg and having a profile of 18.9 mm.

The lid doesn’t open with one hand, mainly due to the stiff hinges. The design is pleasant to the eyes, with an embossed Vivobook logo on the lid, while the keyboard has some nice touches as well, like the orange Escape key and the chevron pattern on the Enter key.

2. Display quality

There are two OLED panels to choose from, with either FHD or 2.8K resolution. The latter has a 120Hz refresh rate. We tested the 2.8K display, and to say that it’s great would be an understatement. The display has excellent viewing angles, reaches 401 nits of brightness, and has an infinite contrast ratio. It fully covers the sRGB and DCI-P3 gamuts, providing a vibrant and punchy image.

We achieved the best color accuracy results using the DCI-P3 color space with a D65 white point. This way, both with and without our Design and Gaming profile, we have a dE value of below 2. Here are our test results with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

3. Battery life

The laptop carries a 70Wh battery pack and with no discrete GPU, we see amazing efficiency from the Ryzen 5000H-series. The VivoBook S 15 lasts for 16 hours and 26 minutes of Web browsing, or 10 hours and 18 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. Performance

The laptop offers either the Ryzen 5 5600H or the Ryzen 7 5800H. There’s also a separate model with the Ryzen 6000H-series.

CPU benchmarks

Here we tested the Ryzen 5 5600H. It performed similarly to the Core i7-1255U, which has a base TDP of 15W, a lot lower than the 45W of the Ryzen 5. Despite that, the laptop still delivers better battery life, which is a fantastic showing of the efficiency of AMD CPUs.

1 reason NOT to buy the ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502)

1. Cooling

The cooling setup consists of two heat pipes and one fan, which siphons the heat away. Then we have two heat sinks on the edges of the laptop.

Max CPU load

ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (M3502)3.41 GHz (B+3%) @ 92°C3.15 GHz @ 92°C3.11 GHz @ 92°C

The CPU spikes up to 92°C right from the get-go, keeping the temperature the same, while clock speeds go down slowly but surely.

Comfort during full load

The fan gets very noisy during extreme loads, while the keyboard remains cool, with the base reaching only 37°C.
