ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

Innovation is important for the growth of the laptop market. Sadly, ASUS seems to be one of the only manufacturers to specifically bring out new and interesting concepts that introduce new ways of interacting with technology.

They have been pretty big on the double display trend, which has been quite successful, with both increasing the screen real estate of a device, and improving the cooling as well. The ZenBook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402) sports a ScreenPad Plus that lifts up, allowing for a large access point for air to get into the system, while also allowing you to do Creator work like never before.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402).

ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop comes with an aluminum lid and body that weighs 1.75 kg and has a profile of 19.6 mm at the thickest point, which is pretty good for a 14-inch device with two screens and the extra mechanical components. The chassis has sharp edges and rounded corners. The lid uses the new ASUS logo, which looks a bit different. The laptop is incredibly tough, but due to the second screen, the keyboard and touchpad position is a bit weird, due to the lack of a palm rest. Previously, ASUS included an attachable palm rest, but we didn’t see anything included with the notebook, besides the Stylus pen.

2. I/O

The laptop comes with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a single USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

3. Display quality

Both the main 2.8K OLED panel and the additional 12.7-inch ScreenPad Plus come with 100% DCI-P3 coverage, as well as good color accuracy. With a max brightness of 360 nits, it’s not the brightest panel that we’ve seen, but the luminance is uniform across the entire display area, so you’re getting even colors.

Here are the results of our color accuracy test on the main display with both the stock settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

4. Battery life

The laptop’s 76Wh battery pack lasts for 7 hours and 33 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 32 minutes of video playback, which is decent, considering the two displays and the Core i9 CPU that we have onboard. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402)

1. Upgradeability

The Zenbook uses Torx-head screws, so you would need an extra set of tools if you want to access the insides. However, once inside, you really don’t have a lot to do, thanks to the soldered LPDDR5 memory that runs in quad-channel mode. There is only one M.2 PCIe x4 slot for SSD upgrades, which fits Gen 4 drives.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access the single SSD slot.
