DirectX 12 + mobile NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 equals up to 22% better frame rates in 1080p

Sure, we laid out some Full HD and 4K gaming tests yesterday but what about the DirectX 12 optimization? Does the hype around Microsoft’s latest API live up to its expectations? We find out with the new mobile version of the popular NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070.

We ran the built-in benchmark tests on the latest HITMAN and Rise of the Tomb Raider titles using Full HD and 4K settings. It’s needless to say that the performance leap over the last generation is monstrous but to make things even crazier, the DirectX 12 optimization on the HITMAN game is just absurd. Unfortunately, though, the Rise of the Tomb Raider didn’t deliver as much as we expected but the performance leap is still noticeable.

As you can see below, the DX 12 helped the GTX 1070 squeeze out around 15-22% more frames per second in 1080p. Whereas Rise of the Tomb Raider offered as little as 8-11% increase with DirectX 12 switched on. However, the 4K tests show little to no optimization when the DX 12 API is used. There could be a number of reasons why the GPU wasn’t able to render more frames – early testing sample, early driver version (we tested on WHQL 368.49), or the most obvious one – poor 4K optimization in DX 12. So at this point, when it comes to 4K gaming, sticking to DX 11 is probably the best option. The frame rates in 4K are still hell of impressive, though.

If you missed the usual DX 11 gaming tests of the GTX 1070, head here for more information.
