Lenovo Legion 5i Pro (16″, 2022): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro (16″, 2022)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop reuses the same metal chassis from last year, but with some very minor design tweaks. The Y-logo which was illuminated before is now gone, replaced by a reflective Legion text. It’s very durable, with no flex from both the lid and the base. The device is a bit thinner now, with a profile of 19.9 mm. However, it is still as heavy as before, weighing 2.46 kg. Coupled with the large 300W power adapter, you’ll need a pretty sturdy backpack to carry both of them around.

The lid opens easily with one hand, revealing a standard Lenovo keyboard. As with its predecessor, it’s one of the best that we’ve tested, with long key travel, clicky feedback, and a backlight. It also has a NumPad, keeping things practical. The touchpad is covered in Mylar, which is very smooth. The thing is pretty large, while the tracking and accuracy are satisfactory.

2. Upgradeability

The laptop retains its ample upgradeability from before, with two SODIMM slots and two M.2 PCIe x4 slots being available. They are covered by a shroud but are still easily accessible. The slots fit DDR5 RAM sticks and Gen 4 SSDs, respectively.

Here is our teardown video, which explains how to access both the RAM and SSD slots inside.

3. Display quality

The display was the star of the show last year, with a 500+ nits panel. It’s still available with the 2022 notebook, however, we see an FHD+ option as well. It’s got excellent viewing angles and a peak brightness of 369 nits. It still covers 97% of the sRGB color gamut, while showing excellent accuracy with our Design and Gaming profile.

Here are the color accuracy results with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

4. Performance

The Legion 5i Pro carries the 12th Gen Alder Lake H-series processors, with up to the Core i9-12900H. The GPU selection is good as well, with up to the RTX 3070 Ti, which comes with a 150W power limit. We settled for the base variant, which offers a Core i5-12500H, a CPU with 12 cores and 16 threads, along with a 140W RTX 3060, which is a very potent combination for both gaming and content creation.

CPU benchmarks

Compared to last year’s model, the 2022 Legion 5i Pro is much quicker, thanks to the performance bump from Alder Lake. It’s also quicker than the Ryzen 7 6800H inside the regular Legion 5 and the Acer Nitro 5 with the Core i5-12500H.

GPU benchmarks

As for the graphics, the extra 10W doesn’t really contribute much.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro (16″, 2022)

1. Battery life

The 80Wh battery lasts for 5 hours and 29 minutes of Web browsing, or 5 hours and 54 minutes of video playback, which isn’t much when put against the rest of the field. The Legion 5 with the Ryzen 7 6800H is especially efficient, delivering exceptional battery life.
