Quick look at Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) – first impressions, camera, performance

During the last couple of weeks we acquainted you thoroughly with almost all Samsung Galaxy J models, which were announced this year. Today, however, we would like to turn your attention to the smallest member of this lineup which also costs less than all others. We are talking about Galaxy J1 (2016). We finally laid our hands on it, so it’s time for us to share our first impressions with you, and you can also expect a detailed review shortly.

As we already mentioned, this is the smallest Galaxy J model, and the reason for this is its 4.5-inch display. Perhaps, if you have been using a larger smartphone until now, Galaxy J1 might seem as too tiny. On the other hand, we can’t but appreciate the compactness and comfort when working with a single hand – something which is quite uncommon these days. As you may expect, this device is quite light with its 131 grams. Also, its profile thickness is only 8.9 mm. As far as form factor, construction and appearance are concerned, we can easily say that they are quite similar to those of other J models. We are again presented with a removable plastic back under which hides a replaceable battery.

Apart from being smaller, Galaxy J1’s display also features lower resolution – 800 x 480 p, which translates into 245 ppi. We are mostly happy with the Super AMOLED panel that brings contrasty and more saturated colors, as well as wide viewing angles. Also, the settings menu offers the well-known Outdoor mode that significantly increases screen brightness for ease of use outdoors.

All Galaxy J models we’ve tested so far displayed awesome battery life. The unit found in Galaxy J1 has a lower capacity of 2050 mAh. On the other hand, the smaller display means lower energy consumption. Apart from this, the device also offers the Ultra Power Saving mode.

Similarly to Galaxy J3, there is a quad-core (Cortex-A7) processor but this time its frequency is up to 1.3 GHz and not up to 1.5 GHz. Despite this, we expect similar results in our performance tests.

Software-wise, this smartphone features Android 5.1.1 Lollipop customized by Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. It brings not only a complete change in appearance but also some additional apps such as S Planner and Smart Manager, for example. However, you won’t find the popular Easy mode, nor the themes and wallpapers section.

The main camera is 5 MP, and we present some photos so that you may know what to expect. As far as additional settings and modes are concerned, there are no significant changes over Galaxy J3 with the except for the unavailable HDR mode. However, Panorama, Beauty face, Sound & shot, Pro and other options are available. You can also record HD video.
