If you’re looking for a daily driver and have a decent amount of cash to spend, you should totally look into the Vivobook lineup from ASUS. The brand offers laptops in all price points, with more budget options, like the standard Vivobook 14 and 15, while pumping out a lot of OLED variants as well. The Vivobook 16 (M1605) is a brand new, more affordable addition, with a large 16-inch IPS display, as well as powerful Ryzen 7000U-series processors, which still use the Zen 3 architecture and aren’t paired with the RDNA 2 integrated graphics, instead relying on the older Vega units, which isn’t ideal in our opinion.

Design

The laptop undoubtedly looks good, taking some design cues from its more expensive Zenbook siblings. The sides and the edges of the base are chamfered, while the lid has a sharp edge and an anodized finish. It’s unclear if the laptop is made of metal, however, it has passed the MIL-STD-810H certification tests, so you can be sure that it can survive day-to-day use unscathed. The trademark Vivobook designs are here, with a protruding plaque on the lid as well as chevron patterns on the keyboard.

There is an optional backlight for it, while the keys themselves are slightly indented, to contour the natural shape of your fingers, which should improve typing. The touchpad offers a fingerprint reader in the top right corner, which can be a hit or a miss since sometimes it does interfere with the clicking surface. In terms of dimensions, the laptop weighs 1.88 kg and has a profile of 19.9 mm.

The port selection of the machine includes one USB Type-A 2.0 port, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Display

The FHD+ IPS panel comes with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which means a taller display with extra pixels, while the size of the laptop remains pretty similar to a 15.6-inch machine. The panel has a max brightness of 300 nits and covers about half of the sRGB gamut, so say goodbye to using the machine for professional content creation.

Specifications and features

The laptop has three CPUs to choose from, the Ryzen 5 5625U, the Ryzen 5 7530U, and the Ryzen 7 7730U. The former two have 6 cores and 12 threads, while the Ryzen 7 upgrades to 8 cores and 16 threads. The processors use the Zen 3 architecture, not even Zen 3+ of the Ryzen 6000-series. For graphics, you get the older Vega integrated graphics instead of the RDNA 2 iGPUs that we’re inside the 6000-series. Overall, we would recommend looking for a last year’s 6000-series CPUs instead of these 7000-series impostors.
