Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (15.0″): Full Specs

Design

As with all other Surface devices, the build quality is one of the best that we have seen. The entire laptop is made out of metal, with the alloy not being specified. the overall body seems pretty similar to the Surface Laptop 3 and that was a fantastic device, which was super rigid and had a great design. The build materials include the aforementioned metal alloy, glass for the display cover, which is great and provides a good level of scratch and shatter resistance. There is an option for a base, made out of Alcantara, which is a soft textile but has similar qualities to suede. The weight of the laptop is very manageable, considering the dimensions, sitting at 1.54 kg. The device is also quite slim, being only 14.7 mm tall.

Display

The display is a very good one. It has a diagonal of 15.0 inches and a 2496×1664 resolution, which calculates to a 3:2 aspect ratio. The screen is on paper the same as the panel on the Surface Laptop 3, and that display had great color coverage and accuracy, which would ensure a great time for an artist or a designer and other people who appreciate great color reproduction. The bezels are on the thicker side, but it’s not that big of a deal, to be honest.

Specifications and features

The device can come with hardware from both AMD and Intel. The available CPUs are the Core i7-1185G7 and the Ryzen 7 4980U, which are dubbed Surface Edition. This means that they have some special sauce, which according to Microsoft improves the single-thread performance of Intel chips, making the device perfect for developers, data scientists, and researchers. The AMD processors have improved multi-threaded performance, which is perfect for multitasking and information workers.

The iGPUs inside these powerful chips are also reworked and made more powerful. The iGPUs of choice are the Iris Xe Graphics G7 (96EU) for the Intel side and the Radeon RX Vega 8 (15W) on the AMD side. Both of them are quite powerful, with the Iris Xe Graphics being slightly better.

Some caveats are the tiny I/O, which only has two USB ports (one Type-A and one Type-C) and a 3.5mm audio jack. Other features include the Dual Far-Field Studio Microphones and the Omnisonic Speakers, which have Dolby Atmos support. Omnisonic speakers are usually hidden beneath the base or keyboard, which is the case here, and eliminate the need for speaker grills.
