Acer TravelMate P4 TMP449 uses harmful low-frequency PWM to regulate screen brightness

Acer TravelMate P4 TMP449 is a budget business notebook that we recently reviewed. It’s and overall great device with an affordable price tag but the screen is where Acer cut costs. TravelMate P4 uses an Innolux N140BGA-EA3 TN panel with 1366 x 768p resolution. It does not provide good viewing angles nor color reproduction which is normal for a budget TN panel but we are mostly concerned with the regulation of the brightness.

Our lab equipment recorded low-frequency PWM from 0 to 99% screen brightness at 200 Hz which can be considered as quite aggressive and harmful. This can lead to severe eye strain or headaches, especially for more sensitive users. However, our custom-tailored Health-Guard profile can eliminate the harmful PWM and lower the Blue light emissions.
