ASUS G501 with GeForce GTX 960M – gaming tests with the latest NVIDIA drivers (350.05)

We’ve recently tested this GPU on the new generation Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition notebook, but the results from gaming tests seemed oddly low. We think this is due to the absence of official NVIDIA drivers for this particular GPU and we used the ones provided on the DVD – 345.05. We have also updated the review on this model with gaming tests with the latest drivers – 350.05.

However, the new ASUS ROG G501 was released a few weeks back and featured the very same GeForce GTX 960M GPU and boasts relatively the same compact chassis as the Aspire Nitro V15 Black Edition and Lenovo Y50. Those are probably one of the best portable gaming machines on the market, so it’s interesting to see the performance of the GPU with the latest drivers from NVIDIA.

Stay tuned for our detailed review on ASUS ROG G501 and in the meantime, you can check out this article going into details of the full specs sheet of the gaming notebook, we also have some information about the price, and if you are interested, watch this video explaining the internals and hardware.

That still seems oddly low, though?

Notebookcheck has completely different readings:

Metro: Last Light @1080p, Very High, 16xAF ~ 31 FPS
Tomb Raider @1080p, Ultra preset, 16xAF, FXAA ~ 50 FPS

Why is that?

The readings aren’t taken directly from a G501, though, but it’s the average reading taken from laptops with the 960M.

The tests in the article are conducted using ASUS G501 while the ones you mention are probably 960M’s average. There is a difference between the 960M results in G501 and other laptops, like Aspire V15 Nitro, and today we’re going to publish a direct performance comparison between V15 Nitro (960M) and G501 (960M).

Could you please post a full review of the Asus G501. I’m looking forward to get one but I’m concered about the fan noise and the overall chassis heat. Could you also say something about the build quiality of the chassis and how is the feeling?
