Lenovo has finally updated its Y50 display with IPS along with GTX 960M

lenovo-laptop-y50-front-1We were quite satisfied with last year’s result of the Y50’s performance, despite the fact that the hardware was crammed inside incredibly thin chassis. However, this year Lenovo has updated its famous Y50 series gaming notebooks with the latest NVIDIA graphics card – GeForce GTX 960M.

As you all know, a good gaming laptop isn’t just a powerful hardware. For the big price tag you’d expect a good sound and visual experience. The first one is delivered by a set of JBL loudspeakers and a subwoofer on the bottom of the machine, but lacked quality IPS panel from last year. Frankly, that’s the main thing a lot of customers didn’t like about the 2014’s Y50 – it had awful TN panel with subpar color reproduction, low contrast, low color gamut coverage and mockingly bad viewing angles. Nevertheless, this year Lenovo has learned from their mistakes and introduced the refreshed series not only with GTX 960M, but also with the brand new Intel Core i7-4720HQ, and IPS panel.

Unfortunately, Lenovo didn’t go too far with the new panels. According to our initial tests, the panel of the Y50 has poor color gamut coverage – only 64% of the sRGB and low maximum brightness – 235 cd/m2. Also, we’ve recorded PWM across all brightness levels, but the emitted frequency of the light is 21.6 kHz, thus making it more or less harmless to your eyes. There is some good news, though. The IPS panel now has excellent viewing angles, better contrast and good color reproduction – aspects in which last year’s Y50 failed to deliver.

For the full display tests, you will have to wait for our detailed review, which is coming soon, so stay tuned.
