Lenovo Legion 5 (15″, 2021) uses a new display panel by BOE – one of the best on the market

Gaming laptops definitely have the performance to handle heavy workloads, creative suit included. However, the more budget options out there often have a less than impressive display, which really doesn’t allow the devices themselves to shine.

The most recent Legion 5 from Lenovo, which you can read all about here, comes with a very good panel, that covers the creative aspect. It’s not all perfect, though, so stay tuned.

Lenovo Legion 5 (15″ AMD, 2021): Full Specs / In-depth Review

Display quality

The thing about this exact panel is that it is brand new. It is manufactured by the Chinese manufacturer BOE and it will pretty soon enter mass production. The panel definitely surprised us with its good qualities. It has comfortable viewing angles, which you can check out below.

The color coverage is definitely Creator material, as the panel covers 97% of the sRGB color gamut.

The color coverage was the real surprise here, as even without our Design and Gaming profile, the panel had a dE value of 1.7. Things got even better when we did apply the profile, with the dE value going down to 0.7, which is even better. Below you can see the results before and after the display calibration.

Another good aspect about it is its fast pixel response time that bodes well with the 165Hz refresh rate of the panel.

Lastly, there is a caveat with this display, as there is an unevenness in the luminance in the bottom left corner of the display, with a deviation of 23%.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
