NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti vs GTX 1050 Ti – the Turing GPU is roughly 40% faster than its Pascal cousin

We all know that the Turing architecture brought a big improvement over the Pascal one. And we are not only talking about the inclusion of ray-tracing. The GPUs were a lot more efficient, thus providing vastly better performance for roughly the same TGP penalty. Today, we have to graphics cards that look like two natural ancestors. Moreover, they are very important for NVIDIA. For several years, the GTX 1050 Ti was the go-to graphics card for budget gaming. However, as games became better looking, and require more power, this guy just can’t get cope with them. This is exactly where the GTX 1650 Ti comes into play.

Specs overview

Technically, these two GPUs are fundamentally different from one another. The GTX 1650 Ti uses the TU117 chip, as part of the Turing architecture, and is built on a 12nm node, whereas the GTX 1050 Ti uses the GP107 graphics processor, that is built on a 14nm manufacturing process from Samsung. Additionally, the new device has the upper hand when it comes to CUDA cores – 1024 to 768 for the Pascal GPU. On the other side, the GTX 1650 Ti works at slightly lower base-boost clocks (1350-1485 MHz), while the GTX 1050 Ti’s chip ticks from 1493 MHz to 1620 MHz. Interestingly, the Turing GPU has a TGP of “only” 55W – 15W less than the GTX 1050 Ti, making it far easier to stick into a small form factor.

There is a significant difference in the memory department. On the upper side, there is the GTX 1650 Ti with its 4GB of GDDR6 memory, built on a 128-bit bus, and having a bandwidth of 192 GB/s. Then, the older tech, provides 4GB of GDDR5 memory on the same bus width, with a bandwidth of 112 GB/s.

Benchmarks

Here, the synthetic benchmarks hint at a huge defeat for the GTX 1050 Ti.

I risultati provengono dal benchmark 3DMark: Time Spy (Graphics) (più alto è il punteggio, migliore è il risultato).

Verdict

The king of budget gaming is dead, long live the king of budget gaming. Thankfully, though, the demise of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is only a win for NVIDIA. With its new GTX 1650 Ti, it aims to stabilize its positions in the budget gaming laptop market. Its significantly higher performance, brought in by around 25% less power consumption, should make integrating this GPU in smaller devices easier than ever. Let’s not forget that there are two other iterations of the TU117 GPU, found in the GTX 1650 and the GTX 1650 Max-Q, which would be less expensive, and less burden for the cooling, respectively.

With that said, you shouldn’t rule out the GTX 1050 Ti as a laptop GPU. If you can find a great deal for the same hardware but more than 50 bucks cheaper, it is worth getting the older device, as it is still able to run all of the latest AAA titles, albeit with a lower graphics setting.
