AMD Radeon R7 M445 vs GeForce 940M, 940MX, 950M and 960M – benchmarks and gaming comparison

Most budget notebooks don’t come with a discrete graphics card, they mostly rely on the integrated one. However, in some cases, we see a budget graphics card in a budget laptop that allows users to play some games – nothing fancy, don’t expect to run games like The Witcher 3 on 4K but at least some modern titles on low setting with reasonable framerates. So if you are one of those persons who are not much into gaming or specs but would like to play some games occasionally and you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a gaming laptop you may find yourself in a pickle – which graphics card to choose? This is where we come. This article is all about comparing a few of the most commonly used mobile graphics chips – AMD Radeon R7 M445, GeForce 940M, 940MX, 950M, and 960M. You are most likely to see an NVIDIA GeForce chip but still, some manufacturers rely on the AMD Radeon alternative.

We are going to check the performance of the graphics processors with synthetic benchmarks using 3DMark and Unigine Heaven. We are also going to see how they handle some games on different graphics settings and let you decide which suits you the best.

Verdict

As you can see, we have excluded the GTX 940M from the gaming tests as this graphics card can barely run this games on Full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution which is used fo the others. We can say that the AMD Radeon R7 M445 and the GeForce 940MX are on par as there is a very little difference in framerates. The R7 M445 gets a little higher framerate in GTA 5 while it is the opposite when it comes to F1 2015. These two graphics cards are most suitable for light gaming.

The GeForce 950M should fall into the category of a mid-range or upper low-end graphics chip. As you can see, it delivers more than twice the performance in terms of fps when it is compared to the Radeon R7 M445.

Asn finally, there is the GeForce 960M – the best of the four models. It delivers almost three times as much fps as the Radeon R7 M445 and it is the only model that successfully runs GTA 5 on maxed graphics settings, though we won’t recommend playing on an average of 13 fps.

Keep in mind that in-game performance varies from one notebook to another because they may have different processors, amounts of RAM, storage technology or cooling system. The performance also depends on the game. As you can see, Grand Theft Auto V which is not the most graphically demanding title on the market but still has its needs is well optimized to run on low setting as we see a lot higher fps compared to F1 2015 on low settings. But these framerates drop significantly when we bump the graphics to medium and it is absolutely unplayable on maxed expect for the GTX 960M. In the case of F1 2015, the framerates are lower on low settings, fairly the same on medium but this time playable on max graphics on every GPU listed.

Most cheap notebooks with dedicated graphics cards are usually equipped with something up to the performance of the GTX 940MX so keep in mind that modern games will be playable only on low setting or lower than 1080p resolution. These graphics cards are more suitable for light games like CS:GO or League of Legends.

Is it an i7 6700hq or an i5 6300hq?
Did u upgrade the ram?
How much Vram does the graphics card have?

Thank u for doing this post, i was looking for a comparison 🙂
