First impressions of Acer Predator 15 (G9-591) – a smaller Predator, but definitely no weaker

If you follow our stories or if you’re a gaming enthusiast, you have surely heard about Acer’s new flagship, Predator 17 (G9-791). If you happen to have missed that, you can make it right with our in-depth review of that very machine. Today we received the other representitive of the Predator line, G9-791’s smaller sibling, Acer Predator 15 (G9-591). Although its enclosure isn’t as big as G9791’s, the 15-incher sports nearly the same components and specifications, including the 6th generation Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ and the most powerful mobile GPU on the market, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M.

Short introduction video

Design

The new Predator has the same aggressive and stylish design. G9-591’s weight starts at 3.4 kg (our unit weighs exactly 3600 g) which is typical for a gaming machine, and we can say the same about the thickness of 3.81 cm (1.5″). Actually, we don’t mind the larger size specs, keeping in mind that cooling the system under continuous high load is of much higher importance as far as gaming is concerned. We’re going to check that in more detail in our upcoming review, but we have high expectations, especially given the splendid results of Predator 17 in the temperature battle against the latest Alienware 17 R3. There is a Predator FrostCore module in the box as well (for swapping with the DVD), which should help the two integrated fans.

Comfort

The interior is covered with matte rubber for comfortable gaming sessions and we’re delighted by the keyboard quality with its long key travel and good feedback. There is a Predator ProZone with macro buttons, profiles and customizable backlight. According to Acer, the whole panel should stay cool even when the computer is under heavy load.

SoundPound 2.1, Killer DoubleShot Pro

There are some other gamer-centric perks. SoundPound 2.1 is the sound system, consisting of two powerful speakers and a subwoofer. We’re going to include Frequency Response in our review, but in our preliminary subjective opinion, they sound great. Killer DoubleShot Pro is a technology that gives you the option of choosing which programs can use your bandwidth and more interestingly, delegating your internet requirements over wired and wireless connections simultaneously.
