Samsung Exynos 8890 (+Mali-T880) vs Exynos 7420 (Mali-T760) – tech specs and CPU/GPU benchmark results

ex1
Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are already in our hands and one of the first things we did is putting them against some benchmark tests. The new flagships are equipped with Exynos 8890 and it’s interesting to see how it fares versus its predecessor – Exynos 7420. Stay tuned for “vs Snapdragon 820” comparison but until then let’s focus on the Exynos line and check what’s new in terms of computing and graphics power.

Exynos 7420

Exynos 7420 is the SoC found in the Samsung’s 2015 top models – Galaxy S6 edge и Galaxy S6. It has four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5 GHz and four Cortex-A57 clocked at 2.1 GHz. Exynos 7420 is the first smartphone SoC built with 14-nm-FinFET-SoC LPE process. It supports LTE Cat 9, which delivers download and upload speeds of 450Mbps and 50Mbps, respectively. The integrated GPU is the high-end Mali-T760MP8. According to Samsung, the 14nm FinFET process makes the Exynos 7420 20% faster, 30% more powerful and 35% more energy efficient, compared to its 20 nm predecessor (Exynos 5433).

Exynos 8890

Exynos 8890 is the latest flagship SoC found on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. It’s built using “Second generation” 14nm FinFET process and has four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.59GHz + four much more powerful Exynos M1 cores that can reach 2.6GHz. According to Samsung, Exynos 8890 is up to 30% faster than Exynos 7 Octa (7420). The latest SoC supports LTE Cat 12/13 which means that S7/S7 edge can theoretically reach 600Mbps download (Cat 12) and 150Mbps upload (Cat 13) speeds. The mobile chip also integrates the Mali-T880MP12 GPU.

Benchmark results

We aren’t surprised that Exynos 8890 surpassed Exynos 7420 in our benchmark tests but we didn’t expect that big of a difference. Actually, these are the highest results we have ever got on a smartphone. Comapred to 7420, Exynos 8890 scored 41% higher results in terms of CPU performance (the first four tests) and up to 54% on the graphics tests (the last three tests).
