3 reasons to buy Acer Predator Helios 300 (17″)

1. Good IPS panel with wide sRGB coverage and high maximum brightness

The 17-inch Helios 300 uses a Full HD (1920×1080) IPS panel that boasts 94% sRGB coverage and high maximum brightness of 312 nits, contributing to the pleasant gaming and multimedia experience. What’s more, you could also install our custom profiles that further improve the color accuracy, white balance and gamma.

2. Fairly portable (thinner and lighter than the competition)

Probably due to the fact that Acer Predator Helios 300 (17″) features an entirely plastic construction, the whole notebook weighs 2.96 kg which makes it far more portable compared to other 17-inch alternatives such as Acer Aspire V Nitro (VN7-793G) and Alienware 17 R4. Furthermore, the laptop sides are thinner than expected – just 29 mm.

3. Good battery life for a 17-inch gaming laptop

We were also quite surprised by the battery life which is more than good for a 17-inch gaming machine. For instance, the 48.9Wh unit provides you with 389 minutes (6 hours and 29 minutes) of web browsing away from a power source.

2 reasons NOT to buy Acer Predator Helios 300 (17″)

1. Poorly designed cooling system (high inner and outer temperatures during load)

Unfortunately, the cooling design is rather inefficient as all three heat pipes connect the two heatsinks and go directly to the cooling fans, which in turn are also stuck together. During our stress tests both the CPU and GPU started running pretty warm under a heavy workload. What’s more, the higher inner temperatures led to increasing the outer temperatures as well – we measured more than 50 °C around the upper part and the center of the keyboard.

2. The screen uses PWM from 0 to 99% brightness (our Health-Guard profile fixes that)

Another con of the notebook is the presence of aggressive PWM from 0 to 99% screen brightness at 1 kHz. We strongly suggest using the display at maximum brightness (100%) in order to avoid the negative impact on your eyesight. In addition, you could also consider our Health-Guard profile which will take care of this issue and reduce the negative blue light emissions while preserving color accuracy as much as possible.
