Forget about the Predator 17X, the Predator 21 X is Acer’s new absurdly powerful, feature-packed gaming flagship

During the IFA event in Berlin Acer dropped a few bombshells with the biggest one being the announcement of the Predator 21 X – a totally new gaming laptop that packs so much of the latest tech that it’s going to burst.

Let’s start with the hardware inside. The beast offers one of Intel’s Kaby Lake high-performance processors – probably the quad-core family with 45W TDP – and not one but two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs working in SLI mode. Unfortunately, it’s still unclear which CPU options will be available for the model since Intel hasn’t yet released its high-end chips. And as far as GPU options go, we suspect the company will be offering the Predator 21 X with GTX 1070 in SLI as well. Storage options are also unclear for now but our best guess is that the usual 2.5-inch HDD along with several M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs will be thrown into the mix.

To support all of this absurdly powerful hardware, Acer has come up with a cooling system that uses five fans and a number of heat pipes. Three of the former are exceptionally thin and use metal propellers called AeroBlade. The same fan design can be found on several Acer models including the Predator 17X.

But that’s not all. One of the key features of this notebook, except the GTX 1080 SLI, of course, is the 21-inch curved IPS display with infrared eye-tracking tech. The display itself offers a 2560 x 1080 resolution and without a doubt, the latest NVIDIA Pascal GPUs will crush those pixels without a sweat even with graphic settings set to maximum. And as for the infrared sensors, they can be used in games to enhance the user experience as long as the game allows it. To top all of this, the panel integrates the G-Sync technology for smoother gameplay. We would be really delighted to see the panel breaking the usual 60Hz refresh rate barrier and bring a buttery-smooth 120Hz frequency so you can fully benefit from the G-Sync technology. To fully take advantage of the multimedia experience, Acer has added four loudspeakers paired with two subwoofers all of which carry the SoundPound 4.2+ branding.

The list of awesome features continues with a mechanical keyboard using Cherry MX switches, which are rated as one of the most durable key designs on the market. The Numpad area, however, uses the standard key design but can be flipped and turned into a touchpad. Neat right? The usual programmable macro keys make an appearance as well and are placed on the left side of the keyboard.

As far as connectivity options go, the notebook offers the usual set of connectors like USB-A and USB-C along with GbE LAN port. What’s more is that the laptop offers not two but three display outputs – two DisplayPorts and one HDMI.

With the unusual design, the laptop is definitely an eye-catcher but when it comes to moving, it’s hardly a mobile gaming laptop but it’s definitely easier to move than a conventional desktop setup with an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard. The price is also unclear for now but we are more than sure it will cost a lot more than your average gaming machine since the Predator 21 X sports two Pascal GPUs in SLI along with the innovative 21-inch curved IPS display. It’s also safe to assume that the laptop will not make an appearance on the market for several months from now since Intel hasn’t yet released its high-end 7th Generation chips.
