ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX701 vs ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 – what’s new?

One of the thinnest 17-inchers of 2019 was the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 and its successor is no different because it has the same thin profile alongside the big display. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it – it seems that ASUS has followed this motto and the 2020 model is an improved version of the last year one. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX701 can be a really powerful beast with the newest Comet Lake-H processors and the refreshed RTX Super GPUs from NVIDIA.

Design: thin, thinner, thinnest, ROG Zephyrus S GX701

The 2020 device has adopted the design of its predecessor – a forward-placed keyboard, super-thin profile, thin bezels, low weight, and the hinge design that allows to pull the whole body a few millimeters up on its bottom plate (that provides more fresh air for “breathing”). This year’s version has the same profile thickness of 18.7 mm and the weight is just a bit reduced to 2.64 kg.

Display: G-SYNC display with 300Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time

ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX701 has a display that looks really impressive on paper – G-SYNC certified, Full HD resolution, 300Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time. It’s an IPS unit so it’s more likely that everybody will be happy with it because no matter what you’re doing in front of it, the high refresh rate and comfortable viewing angles are always welcomed. This panel is a nice bump compared to the big variety of panel options that the 2019 model has.

Hardware: Intel 10th gen Comet Lake-H and refreshed Super GPUs from NVIDIA

Compared to the old one, the new version is a breath of fresh air (or maybe a re-freshed air, if you know what we mean) with its 8-core CPU options like the Intel Core i7-10875H that has 16MB of cache and 5.1GHz boost clock. The 2019 machine has Coffee Lake CPUs like the Intel Core i7-9750H and Intel Core i7-8750H.

You can go up to NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super that has 3072 shaders and ASUS has implemented the 90W iteration instead of the base 80W one.

Connectivity and ports: plenty of ports

For a big and high-end device. the port selection is on point – three USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-A) ports, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-C) port, a USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen 2) port with DisplayPort support and power delivery capabilities, an HDMI 2.0 connector, an audio combo jack, and an Ethernet port.

Storage and other specs: NVMe and Wi-Fi 6

Its keyboard is a forward-placed unit and the touchpad is on its right side but you can use it as a NumberPad too – a nice idea that saves space too. The keyboard position keeps away the heat from your fingers which provides better comfort during gameplay. We found the last year’s keyboard a bit mushy and with keycaps that have short travel – maybe ASUS has already fixed that but we have to find it out by ourselves.

Nevertheless, we are happy to see two NVMe ports, Wi-Fi 6 connection and Bluetooth 5.0 too.
