Intel Core i3-10110U vs i3-1005G1 – both are too expensive and the actual performance isn’t that good

As we already saw, the modern Core i3s are faster than the Pentium ones. If you need an affordable machine with an Intel CPU your only choices are the i3s and some Pentiums – especially if your budget is really tight. These days, 2 cores and 4 threads are still enough for casual daily usage like Web browsing and watching videos – just don’t overload your browser with a lot of unused tabs and everything will be fine.

Well, if you seek better multitasking you have to pay more for a mid-range Intel processor or some efficient Ryzen 5 Zen+ CPU. A 2-core processor is the bare minimum but sometimes the minimum isn’t the best option no matter how low are your requirements in terms of pure computing power.

Today, we’re going to check the performance of two 10th gen Intel CPUs – Core i3-10110U and i3-1005G1.

Quick Specs

Bulk prices – $281.00 for both CPUs – fair enough, the faster one will win the match. By the way, that’s why we picked those two for our comparison – their prices are equal.

The two processors have the same core and thread count – 2 cores and 4 threads. Their cache size is the same too – 4MB. There aren’t big differences in terms of TDP levels. The i3-10110U is a Comet Lake processor that has higher frequencies than its Ice Lake contender – 2.10 GHz – 4.10 GHz to 1.20 GHz – 3.40 GHz. The i3-1005G1 has higher max supported memory clocks than the Comet Lake CPU – DDR4-2666, LPDDR3-2133 vs DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733.

The Comet Lake processor has Intel UHD graphics for iGPU while the i3-1005G1 has Intel UHD G1 with 32 EUs.

CPU Benchmarks

Ok, the i3-10110U has a 7% higher result here. We have to say that both chips have almost the same performance.

GPU Benchmarks

The Intel UHD Graphics is nothing more than a rebranded UHD 620 and in this case, it’s showing its age – 79% performance gap between these two iGPUs. The UHD G1 wins undisputedly here.

Verdict

So, equal prices, that’s a good start for our verdict. The i3-10110U has a bit better CPU performance (7%) than i3-1005G1 but the latter has a superb low-end GPU that is way faster than the UHD Graphics (+79%). In this case, we declare the Ice Lake processor the winner. The computational performance of the two CPUs is close and it can vary from machine to machine – it depends on cooling, RAM frequencies, single or dual-channel memory, BIOS settings, manufacturer fine-tuning, etc.

The real problem is that both CPUs are too expensive for what they actually are – 2-core processors that have a mediocre performance and they’ll cost you around $281.00. For $297.00 you can have a Core i5-1035G1 which is much faster than any of those two. The bulk price of i5-9400H is $250.00 – that’s a 8-thread processor that is suitable for heavier loads like photo and video editing because it has 8MB cache size and 45W TDP (of course, not that battery-friendly but it sounds like a good deal).

No, thank you Intel, your newer i3s are too expensive. The Pentium CPUs are a better choice for low-end machines and if you need more power you can have a look at some Coffee / Comet / Ice Lake Core i5s.

Did you just compare using the Intel bulk price? Most customers would get these chips as part of the whole laptop. Last I checked the Core i3 laptops are on average $100 cheaper than their Core i5 brethren.

Thank you so much for the review.

In case, Core i5 laptops are 40% more experience than Core i3 laptops inside of Iran. Also Core i3-10110U is 10% more experience than Core i3-1005G1 here. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
