Acer Nitro 5 preview – a budget gaming laptop

The Taiwanese company Acer announced new gaming laptop but this time it is not aimed at serious gamers. Acer Nitro 5 is an entry-level gaming laptop designated for gaming enthusiasts on the hunt for an affordable machine. The device features a 15.6-inch HD IPS display, 7th generation Intel Core processor or AMD FX-9830P, and as for the GPU – you have a choice between NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 and AMD Radeon RX 550. Hardware

As we’ve already mentioned, Acer Nitro 5 comes with two types 7th generation Intel Core processors, from which you can choose between Intel Core i5-7300HQ and Intel Core i7-7700HQ, or AMD FX-9830P. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon RX 550 take care of the smooth gaming. Additionally, the Core configurations come with 8 or 16 GB DDR4 and up to 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD, while the AMD models – 8GB DDR4 and up to 1TB SSD + 1TB HDD.

Display and connectivity options

The models of this series feature s 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display with an IPS matrix. Acer Nitro 5 stands out with its design that shares the aggresive appearance of Acer’s high-quality Predator laptops. You get bright red keyboard illuminations and big exhaust vents on the back.

What’s more, the gaming laptop offers all basic connectivity options – you are presented with a USB Type-C and USB 3.0 (capable of charging external devices when the laptop is off), two usual USB 2.0 ports, HDMI 2.0 and RJ-45. The specs sheet is complemented by gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, card reader, Kensington lock slot.

It would be cool to test undervolting in general, it’s effects on temperature and also on battery life, since usually it’s done by users which don’t have a standard way of measuring battery life.

That’s actually not something I want to know specifically about this laptop as much as it would be nice to know about all of them, specially those that suffer from throttling.

Also it’s possible to undervolt nVidia GPUs using afterburner. That would be nice to see as well

Lots of users reported backlight bleeding, check if your test model got it too
