Inside HP Pavilion Gaming 17 2019 – disassembly and upgrade options

This laptop’s predecessor has made a reputation of having a hard time cooling its components down. However, as we found out, this is definitely not the case with the HP Pavilion Gaming 17 2019. Not only it works a lot cooler, but it works a lot quieter as well. Let’s see what kind of black magic has been performed by HP and how it affects the device in general.

1. Remove the bottom plate

Taking the bottom panel off seems easy at the beginning. Unscrew a total of eight Phillips-head screws and you can simply pry it open… It happens that it is not that simple at all. Unlike the Dell G5 15 5590 and G7 17 7790, whom bottom plate pops open by itself the moment you unscrew the last screw, here you need to work hard around edges and tiny spaces in order to find the perfect spot to start. Honestly, we had it disassembled twice and both times the starting location was completely different, so you have to apply some imagination and just look for the best spot for you.

2. Battery

This laptop was equipped with a modest 52.5 Wh battery pack. It is held in place by four Phillips-head screws, sitting on top of the battery. Interestingly, despite its relatively small capacity, we were able to get a solid 8 hours and 20 minutes of web browsing and around 7 hours of video playback – optimization on point!

3. Memory and storage

Upgradability-wise there is nothing to disappoint here – two RAM DIMMs, supporting up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM with speeds of up to 2666 MHz. This is paired with a duo of storage devices – one SATA connector and one M.2 PCIe slot.

4. Cooling system

Here is the area we were all waiting for. Interestingly, the design looks like nothing special – two fans, two heat pipes and a couple more just for a better thermal transfer. However, we should note that these fans are of quite a big diameter, and more importantly, they are supplied with enough air from the bottom and the bigger exhaust vents make sure that there is no bottleneck at the exit, meaning more air and less noise.

Hi, one fan stopped working (right side at normal position of laptop on table) and neither is HP to help in an acceptable/professional way nor can I find spare parts (cooler fan set) anywhere on the internet. I guess it’s possible to exchange the fan or the cooling system, but where can I get these spare parts? Any help appreciated.
It’s for HP Pavilion Gaming 17-cd0615ng and the broke fan has M2xL5 printed on it. The one on the left side works fine so far.
