Quick look at Acer Aspire Switch 12 S – feature-packed 2-in-1 device

A few months ago the Acer Aspire Switch 12 S made its debut and the company promised it will start selling sometime around February and now we have the chance to play around a bit. Even before the full review, we can easily say that this is probably the best Acer convertible we’ve seen. It’s sleek, it’s good-looking, it has tons of features and an excellent docking station that allows you not only to work on a normal laptop, but also adds two USB 3.0 ports.

Of course, for a premium device, the price is set accordingly – $999 is the starting price point, which includes a Core m3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 12.5-inch Full HD IPS touch panel, 128GB internal storage and IntelRealsense 3D camera.

The availability of the Acer Aspire Switch 12 S is still scarce but you can check regularly here when it pops out: http://amzn.to/1TI2hek

Design

Well, the design is actually one of the key selling points of this product. It uses anodized aluminum for the docking station and diamond-cut edges for the tablet. The back of the tablet, however, uses matte plastic, which feels pretty nice to touch and can barely tell the difference between the aluminum sheet and the plastic imitation.

With the premium choice of materials, the whole device weighs a little bit more than its competitors (1.4 kg) but offers exceptionally thin profile – 7.8 mm for the tablet and 9.45 mm for the keyboard. It’s not bold to say that this is one of the most portable 2-in-1 devices out there and we felt it the minute we got a hold of it. But portability isn’t all – the big keyboard and touchpad bring the user experience on this device on a whole another level. Typing is pleasant and the trackpad feels large enough, responsive and accurate.

Aside the well-crafted chassis, the device offers tons of connectivity options and cool features that will come in handy for sure. The front-facing speakers of the tablet pop out pretty well, the added USB 3.0 ports on the docking station is a big bonus while the tablet holds SD card reader, micro HDMI, USB-C 3.1 with Thunderbolt support and 3.5 mm audio jack. Last, but not least, the Acer Snap Hinge Gold (as the OEM likes to call it) provides extremely easy detaching and attaching so hassle-free usability on-the-go is guaranteed. We will talk more about the features and usage modes in our upcoming full review.

Hardware

As we already mentioned, the base model comes with Core m3 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of ROM, Full HD IPS panel for $999. However, you can opt for a more powerful version with Core m5 or Core m7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage and… 4K Ultra HD screen. Yes, we are eager to see how the 4K version will fare in our tests and we hope we will have the chance in the near future. But for now, the Full HD version should be enough for a full and comprehensive review. Oh, and the Full HD version will undoubtedly offer better battery life than its premium counterpart with the UHD display.
