Snapdragon 625 vs Snapdragon 617 vs Snapdragon 615 – performance, benchmarks and temperatures

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 series has become the highest possible option for mid-range smartphones. Each year we see new additions to it and this article is dedicated to three of the most popular among them. These are the Snapdragon 615, Snapdragon 617 and Snapdragon 625. There are many devices using these chips and this makes their comparison even more intriguing. In the article you will find information about each of the chips, benchmarks comparison, and to what an extent our tests lead to exterior overheating. For these purposes we have chosen the Lenovo Vibe P1 with Snapdragon 615, HTC One A9 with Snapdragon 617, and Lenovo P2 with its Snapdragon 625. We have also provided links for purchase below, if you happen to be after one of the models.

Snapdragon 625

Lenovo P2 works with Snapdragon 625 which boasts a 14nm technological process – something that we see for the first time in the 6xx series by Qualcomm. It has eight Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of up to 2GHz. The chip also includes an X9 modem, providing Cat. 7 LTE connectivity or in other words download speed of up to 300Mbps and up to 150Mbps upload speed. Additionally, Snapdragon 625 also supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC, the Quick Charge 3.0 technology for fast charging, Full HD screens, up to 24MP cameras and 4K video recording. The Adreno 506 GPU takes care of the graphics performance and we also have 3GB of RAM. As for battery life, according to the manufacturer, the new chip will offer up to 35% lower energy consumption compared to Snapdragon 617.

You will find out more about the capabilities of Snapdragon 625 on the official Qualcomm website:

Snapdragon 617

Snapdragon 617 comes in its MSM8952 modification available in HTC One A9. This is a Qualcomm mobile chip, which offers eight Cortex-A53 cores divided into two sections. However, there is a slight difference in their operating frequencies, as their first four cores run at 1.21 GHz, while the other four – at 1.52GHz. Snapdragon 617 is a 64-bit mobile processor manufactured through a 28 nm technological process. Nonetheless, it already supports QuickCharge 3.0 technology, which according to Qualcomm is up to 38% more efficient than QuickCharge 2.0 and offers four times faster charging of the mobile device compared to standard charging. Here we can also find the Qualcomm Safeswitch technology that allows you to remotely deactivate the device in case you lose it or it is stolen. The specs sheet also includes LTE Cat. 7 support with a download speed of up to 300 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, LPDDR3 933MHz memory, Bluetooth 4.1, Full HD displays, up to 21MP cameras as well as Full HD video recording at 60 fps. The GPU is Adreno 405, running at 550MHz.

Snapdragon 615

Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 has several modifications, and we’re testing the one found in Lenovo Vibe P1 – MSM8939. It offers eight Cortex-A53 cores popular for their low energy consumption. They are divided into two groups. The first four are ticking at 1.11 GHz, and when more power is needed – you get the second four, ticking at 1.5 GHz. Snapdragon 615 is a 64-bit mobile CPU manufactured through a 28nm technological process. It supports up to 21MP cameras, Full HD video recording and playback, Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, LTE Cat. 4, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, and NFC. Additionally, this chip brings the Adreno 405 GPU.

Benchmark results

Moving on, the three mobile chips offer smooth operation but what is definitely curious here is a quick juxtaposition. In order to perform this, we have conducted several benchmarks putting to the test both computing (first four tests) and graphics power (last three tests). You can check the results displayed in the table below.

Exterior temperatures

Once again we check the extent to which these mobile chips lead to overheating in the smartphones in question. Before measuring temperatures we load the devices with continuous 3D gaming simulated with the help of the Epic Citadel app. The good news, however, is that neither of the three phones increased their temperatures to worrying values, and so despite the small lead of Lenovo P2 with Snapdragon 625, the other two devices perform within normal degrees.
