Toshiba Satellite P50-C first impressions – upper-mid-range notebook with aluminum design, good for multimedia

The new Toshiba Satellite P50-C just arrived in our office for a full review, but in the meantime we will take a closer look at the notebook and what it has to offer. At this price point there are a lot of solutions from different OEMs and Acer set the bar too high with their Aspire V15 notebooks, but it will be interesting to see if Toshiba is up to the challenge.

Design

Stylish, light and relatively sturdy are the most definitive properties of the chassis. We are impressed with the build quality and it’s par with the Aspire V15.

The lid is almost entirely covered in brushed aluminum with small plastic line at the top edge. It bends a little under pressure and the hinges are again really well tighten because you can open it with only one hand. It’s a common thing for Toshiba notebooks these days and we are quite happy about it. It adds a little bit of comfort with such a small detail. The sides are only 22.5 mm thick and the weight is just as impressive – 2.07 kg.

Everything seems to be aligning with the price tag of the machine and the interior is here to back up the claims. We really liked the keyboard, because the keys offer long travel, they are well-spaced and big enough. The same goes for the touchpad and despite the “rough” surface, all gestures and clicks are accurate. We will form more accurate opinion of the design and construction through the course of testing, so stay tuned for our full review.

Hardware

Typically for Toshiba, most of their products feature different hardware depending on the region. Nonetheless, the configurations won’t vary a lot. Toshiba is offering the Satellite P50-C with 5th generation Intel CPUs starting from Core i5-5200U and going up to Core i7-5500U, but the available RAM remains 8GB. There aren’t too many storage options either, so you can go with 1TB of HDD or 1TB SSHD (8GB SSD cache + 1TB HDD). As for the GPU, you can choose the GeForce 930M or 950M, so you have to choose wisely because there is a big difference between those two.

Interestingly, Toshiba is also putting out AMD variants of the notebook, or we should say only one variant. All the above-mentioned hardware stays the same except for the CPU and the GPU. The CPU is AMD A10-8700P paired with Radeon R6 graphics core, so no discrete graphics card.

Depending on the configuration you choose, the notebook features a 1366×768 TN panel or Full HD IPS panel with glossy finish (like the model we currently have) and images appear to be fantastic. Although, we will have to run some more serious tests to confirm that.

How it looks on the inside

There’s nothing fascinating to be honest. The teardown is rather easy to perform and the upgrade options aren’t a lot. You can check our full article on the matter here: http://laptopmedia.com/highlights/inside-toshiba-satellite-p50-c-disassembly-internal-photos-and-upgrade-options/
