Next, in the Turing versus Pascal battle, we have the Max-Q version of a very capable GPU – the GTX 1660 Ti and one of the most powerful Pascal laptop graphics cards – the GeForce GTX 1070.

Specs overview

GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q is built on а 12nm Turing architecture, while the GTX 1070 uses an older 16nm lithography. This results in a whopping difference in the TDP of both graphics cards – the former consumes 60W, whereas the latter is rated at twice that much – 120W. In terms of CUDA cores, the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q has 1536 and the GTX 1070 has 2048. Clock speeds are as follows – 1140-1335 MHz for the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q and 1442-1645 MHz for the GTX 1070.

There is a significant difference in the memory department as well – the Turing representative has 6GB of GDDR6 VRAM built on a 192-bit bus that has a bandwidth of 192 GB/s. On the other side, GTX 1070 has 8GB of the older GDDR5 VRAM, however, it has a wider bus – 256-bit, hence a higher bandwidth – 256.3 GB/s.

Benchmarks

Synthetic benchmarks show a significant advantage of between 15-30% in favor of the GTX 1070.

Gaming tests

As expected, the GTX 1070 solidified the results of the benchmarks by beating the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q in real gameplay as well.

Conclusion

Without any surprises, the GTX 1070 emerged as the winner from this showdown. However, we should note it needs a ton more cooling headroom than the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q. By the way, the latter performed really nicely in the HP Pavilion Gaming 17 2019, which barely produced any fan noise during gaming.
