Intel Core i7-1065G7 vs Core i5-1035G1 – the smaller one is the smart choice here

Intel Ice Lake CPUs are a hot topic right now and that’s why we are going to compare them all, one by one. This time we picked the Intel Core i7-1065G7 and Core i5-1035G1. The first one is the most powerful CPU in the new 10nm lineup and the second one looks like a decent 8-thread processor. The integrated graphics in both CPUs are different – i7-1065G7 has the top-end Iris GPU while i5-1035G1 got low-end one.

Let’s clash those two CPUs and we’ll see the results.

    Quick Specs

First, the prices – $426 for the Core i7-1065G7 and $297.00 for i5-1035G1 (bulk prices for 1000 units). So, the “big boy” costs $129 more or 44% over the price of i5-1035G1. That’s a lot more money so we will continue with our tests to see if the i7-1065G7 worth its premium price.

Both CPUs are based on Intel’s 10nm Ice Lake architecture and they have the same core count – 4 cores and 8 threads. The max memory supported frequencies of our contenders are “look-alike” too – DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733. The Core i7-1065G7 is taking the lead with 2MB bigger cache size (8MB to 6MB) and higher base and boost frequencies (1.30 GHz- 3.90 GHz vs 1.00 GHz- 3.60 GHz). The TDP levels are close, the i5-1035G1 has just a little bit higher TDP-down value.

As for the iGPUs – we have Intel Iris Plus G7 (64 EUs) for the Core i7-1065G7 and Intel UHD G1 for i5-1035G1 (32 EUs).

    CPU Benchmarks

When it comes to CPU power, the Intel Core i7-1065G7 is 24% faster than i5-1035G1.

    GPU Benchmarks

Again, the i7-1065G7 is faster in our GPU benchmarks thanks to its Iris Plus G7 iGPU. The result is 29% higher than the one of Core i5-1035G1 (with Intel UHD G1).

    Verdict

Ok, we all saw what happened – the Core i7-1065G7 is 24% faster in 3D rendering and its Intel Iris Plus G7 is 29% faster in 3DMark Fire Strike. Not bad, not bad. Don’t forget the prices – the i7-1065G7 is 44% more expensive than Core i5-1035G1. The i7 Ice Lake CPU is a top performer but its price is at a top-level too.

The Core i5-1035G1 is a decent CPU for its money. It has the same core count as its bigger brother, the performance is pleasant, and its iGPU is faster than the old UHD 620. For a much lower price tag, you can have a snappy new-tech CPU that can deliver smooth every-day performance for your usual tasks like Web browsing or watching high-quality videos.

If you have the money and you want something really fast you can get a configuration with an Intel Core i7 9750H – a high-TDP CPU but with a killing performance and lower price than i7-1065G7.

The Core i5-1035G1 is the smart choice in this comparison because of its good price/performance ratio. The Core i7-1065G7 is a nice CPU but it is a bit overpriced in our opinion.
