HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) review – Perfect Travel Companion that Weighs Less than a Kilo
It’s almost unbelievable that an ultra-light laptop such as the HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) is powered by snappy Zen 4 CPUs with up to 8 cores and 45W default TDP. We decided to buy a machine with a 28W AMD Ryzen 7 8840U which will not stress the cooling system as much as the Ryzen 7 8840HS. The razor-thin profile comes at the cost of some missing functionalities such as a lack of SODIMMs and just one storage slot. Still, the port selection looks great for a 13-incher and you can easily open the bottom panel for servicing.
The display department is represented by two IPS panels – one 1200p and the optional 1600p unit. We choose the latter but the ppi of the base screen is also good enough for work or browsing the Web. This machine may be small but it’s full of useful features like an IR Web camera, Type-C charging, a backlit keyboard, audio by Poly Studio, and Wi-Fi 6/E + Bluetooth 5.3 for connectivity. This is definitely not a gaming notebook, but the integrated AMD Radeon 760M or 780M are powerful enough to provide a decent FPS while playing popular light games such as Dota 2.

What’s in the box?
The box contains a bit of paperwork and a 65W Type-C adapter.
Design and construction
The design of the Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) is typical for the manufacturer and its business lineup of machines – clean, minimalistic, with just one HP logo on the center of the lid. After a day of usage, it’s hard to spot any smudges on the matte surface of our laptop in Natural Silver (the other option is called Sky Blue). The chassis is made of a mix of plastic and metal. HP states a weight of “less than 1 kg”. We measured 983 grams – nice! The profile thickness is 16.5 mm. This is one of the most compact machines that we have ever tested!
You’ll need your both hands to open the lid because the hinges are very stiff and the main body of the laptop is very light. The lid can be moderately flexed which is normal since it’s thin. However, the base is impressively solid.
The bezels around the screen are narrow. The top one houses a 5MP IR Web camera for Windows Hello. The dual-mic unit has a privacy shutter and supports temporal noise reduction.
The lid with its two bottom-placed rubber feet lifts the rear of the base when the angle of opening is bigger than 90 degrees. This enhances the ergonomics during typing and the cooling capabilities of the thermal system.
The backlit keyboard features pretty sizable and well-spaced keycaps with surprisingly long travel and clicky feedback. The board with a Copilot shortcut is comfortable for typing and the only thing that we can mention as a con is the reduced size of the “Up” and “Down” Arrow keys.
The touchpad is big enough for a 13-inch form factor. The surface is relatively smooth, the clicks are noisy, but the tracking feels good. So, yes, the pad is suitable for work.
The bottom plate is business as usual – two long rubber feet, a ventilation grill, and two speaker cutouts. The heat is guided through a vent on the rear. Some amount of hot air reaches the lower side of the display during heavy CPU loads.
Ports
On the left, you get a 5 Gbps USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with charging capabilities and an Audio combo jack. On the right, there is a 10 Gbps USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, an HDMI 2.1, and two 10 Gbps USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports that support USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4a, and HP Sleep and Charge functionality.
Display and Sound Quality, Get our Profiles
HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) is equipped with a WQXGA (Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array) IPS panel, model number LG Display LGD0715. It comes with a 60Hz refresh rate. Its diagonal is 13.3″ (33.8 cm), and the resolution – 2560 x 1600p. Additionally, the screen ratio is 16:10, the pixel density – 227 ppi, and their pitch – 0.11 x 0.11 mm. The screen can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 39 cm (this is based on the pixel density and the typical viewing distance at which individual pixels cannot be distinguished by the human eye).
Viewing angles are good. We offer images at different angles to evaluate the quality.
Also, a video with locked focus and exposure.
The maximum measured brightness is 443 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen and 415 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 18% (above what is acceptable). The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 7120K.
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. The illustration below shows how matters are for operational brightness levels (approximately 180 nits) – in this particular case at 57% Brightness (White level = 181 cd/m2, Black level = 0.13 cd/m2).
Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work (a maximum tolerance of 2.0 ). The contrast ratio is good – 1380:1.
To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.
Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people on HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.
Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.
The yellow dotted line shows HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000)’s color gamut coverage.
Its display covers 98% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976 and 80% of DCI-P3.
Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature at 180 cd/m2 luminance (Illuminant white point – D65), sRGB encoding curve.
We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc. You can check out the results at factory condition and also, with the “Design and Gaming” profile.
Below you can compare the scores of the HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) with the default settings (left), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).
The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.
The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is enhanced with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale, and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.
Response time (Gaming capabilities)
We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa (these terms refer to the time it takes for pixels to change from one color to another (black to white and back to black in this case), a shorter time reduces picture blur with fast moving images).
We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 21.8 ms.
After that, we test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “Gray-to-Gray” method from 50% White to 80% White and vice versa between 10% and 90% of the amplitude.
Health Impact: PWM (Screen flickering)
Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.
HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000)’s display doesn’t flicker at any brightness level. This makes the screen pretty comfortable for long periods of use.
Health Impact: Blue light emissions
Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.
Health Impact: Screen Reflectance
Glossy-coated displays are sometimes inconvenient in high ambient light conditions. We show the level of reflection on the screen for the respective laptop when the display is turned off and the measurement angle is 60°.
The HP Pavilion Aero 13 has a reflectance of 62.5 GU.
High Gloss: >70 GU
Medium Gloss: 30 – 70 GU
Low Gloss: <30 GU
Sound
HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000)’s speakers produce a sound of very good quality. Its low, mid, and high tones are clear of deviations.

Temperatures and comfort, Battery Life
Max CPU load
In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.
Average core frequency (base frequency + X); CPU temp.
| AMD Ryzen 7 8840U (28W TDP) | 0:02 – 0:10 sec | 0:15 – 0:30 sec | 10:00 – 15:00 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) | 3.08 GHz @ 57°C @ 30W | 2.75 GHz @ 65°C @ 25W | 2.24 GHz @ 67°C @ 20W |
The 8-core Ryzen 7 8840U is a serious challenge for this modest single heat pipe thermal system. Here, the CPU struggles to reach the official base clock of 3.20 GHz even in short loads. In prorogued periods of 100% processor stress, the frequency is just ~2.24 GHz. On the bright side, the chip temperatures are always low.
Comfort during full load
The MyHP app offers three power presets. Note that the “Power Saver” mode is only available when the charger isn’t plugged in. The single fan isn’t noisy when the CPU is pounded with heavy stress in “Performance” mode.
During heavy loads such as 3D rendering, the hot spot on the keyboard is on the right side and it reaches around 46°C (the same temperature that we also observed on the lower bezel of the display that is close to the back exhaust vent). The keycaps there don’t feel hot to the touch. This leads to good comfort even when the internals are pushed to their limits.
Switching to “Balanced” mode for heavy tasks doesn’t make a lot of sense. The noise is just slightly reduced and the CPU clock hits 1.60 GHz which is too low for serious work.
Battery
Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows’ Power Efficiency setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 180 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. This laptop’s 43Wh battery pack lasts for around 9 hours and a half of video playback. To achieve that, you have to apply the “Best Power Efficiency” preset in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu and select the “Power Saver” mode in the MyHP app. The “Fan always on” function is disabled in the BIOS.
Luminozitate: 180 nits; Mod Afișaj: SDR
Timp până la Descărcare Completă: Mai mare este mai bun

Disassembly, Upgrade options, and Maintenance
To gain access to the internals, you have to undo just 4 Phillips-head screws. Raise the two zones close to the top two corners behind the hinge cover to open gaps in these sections. Fully pry the sides and the front, the rear side should be last.
Here’s how the bottom plate looks on the inside.
This laptop has a 43Wh battery. To remove it, unplug the connector from the mainboard, and undo the 4 Phillips-head screws that fix the unit to the chassis. The capacity is enough for around 9 hours and a half of video playback.
All devices of this HP series rely on soldered 16GB of LPDDR5x-6400 MHz memory in dual-channel mode.
You get just one M.2 slot for 2280 Gen 4 SSDs. The NVMe drive is protected by a metal shroud that is held in place by 2 Phillips-head screws. On the inside of the metal plate, there is a long thermal pad. The Wi-Fi card is placed on the right of the SSD slot.
Here are some close-ups of the SSD’s memory and controller chips.
The modest cooling seems enough for an iGPU-only laptop. It has a large fan, a heat pipe, one long tall top-mounted heat sink, and a heat spreader.
Verdict
The HP Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) is a small lightweight 13-inch machine that is tuned for comfort. During heavy CPU loads, the single fan isn’t noisy and the keyboard doesn’t feel scorching hot to the touch. Our machine with the optional AMD Ryzen 7 8840U feels responsive for daily or office usage despite the fact that the CPU can’t reach its official base clock even in short loads. Still, the chip is well-cooled because the max temperature during long 100% stress is 67°C – perfectly fine. When you add the great keyboard in the mix, you get a pretty capable notebook for work on the go since the battery life is long.
The optional 1600p display (LG Display LGD0715) offers a sharp image and superb color accuracy when our “Design and Gaming” profile is applied. The PWM-free panel reaches a high maximum brightness of 443 nits and 98% sRGB coverage – nod bad HP, not bad! The presence of four USB ports is a nice addition to this machine that weighs less than a kilo. The upgradability is nothing to write home about but that is expected given the dimensions of this gadget. The Pavilion Aero 13 (13-bg0000) is a super light device that impresses with a vibrant IPS panel, long autonomous life, a comfortable keyboard, and good comfort under max CPU load.
