MSI Thin A15 B7V review: Thin Budget = Thin GPU Power (But It Has Some Strenghts Too!)

The MSI Thin A15 makes a clear promise right in its name: it aims to deliver a gaming experience in a portable, lightweight package. To achieve this slim profile without melting its components, MSI has made a drastic and defining decision: to severely limit the power of its graphics card. The result is a laptop with an RTX 4060 that, in many cases, performs worse than cheaper machines equipped with an RTX 4050. This is the central paradox of the Thin A15. It’s a machine that boasts phenomenal cooling and excellent stability, but at what cost to performance? Is its quiet, cool operation enough to justify such a significant handicap?

What’s in the box?
MSI keeps the unboxing experience for the Thin A15 B7V focused and minimalist.
Inside, you’ll find the core essentials: the laptop itself, its 120W power adapter, and the usual set of instructional booklets.
However, MSI does include a nice digital bonus – a code for one month of PC Game Pass to get your gaming library started.
Design and construction
The MSI Thin A15 B7V utilizes a design that’s a classic in MSI’s playbook, a familiar chassis that has served numerous entry-level gaming series well. It’s a visually pleasing and successful design; when closed, its clean lines and dark “Cosmos Gray” finish (a shade reminiscent of Apple’s Space Gray) could almost let it pass as a stylish work laptop.
The only real giveaways to its gaming nature are the slightly more aggressive angular lines at the front. Of course, this subtlety vanishes the moment you open the lid and power it on, as the single-colour blue keyboard backlight bathes the deck in a cool, futuristic glow. The chassis is made of plastic that mimics the look of metal, and while it does pick up some light smudges here and there, they’re easily wiped away.
As the “Thin” in its name suggests, this model aims for portability, though we’d say it succeeds more on the “light” front than the “thin” one. It weighs a very manageable 1.86 kg (4.10 lbs), making it easy to carry around. Its thickness, at 21.7 mm (approximately 0.85 inches), is reasonable but not record-breaking. This physical profile is a direct result of the balancing act MSI is performing here: achieving good gaming performance at a budget-friendly price, which we know involves some component power adjustments we’ll explore later. In line with its budget positioning, the build quality is functional but not luxurious. There’s a bit of flex in some areas if you apply pressure, which is typical for more affordable gaming machines, and the hinges are too firm for a one-handed open.
Once open, the display is framed by respectably thin 7mm (approximately 0.28 inches) side bezels. The top bezel, however, is quite substantial, measuring 17mm (approximately 0.67 inches) at its thickest point in the center. This area houses the basic HD (720p @ 30fps) webcam and microphones. A cost-saving measure here is the absence of a privacy shutter for the camera. The screen itself opens to a maximum angle of about 140 degrees, which is perfectly adequate as there are no touchscreen versions that would necessitate a lay-flat design.
The keyboard deck forgoes a NumPad, a decision we feel is wise, as squeezing one in would have resulted in uncomfortably small keys. This allows the main keys to be generously sized and comfortable for both typing and gaming, even without much space flanking the keyboard. As mentioned, the keyboard features a striking blue backlight. For biometric login, you’ll be relying on traditional passwords, as there is no fingerprint reader. Below the keyboard is the trackpad, and this has historically been an area of compromise for MSI’s budget series. While it gets the job done for basic navigation, it does exhibit a certain looseness, producing a slight rattling sound when tapped. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s a noticeable quirk. Its size is also modest at 105 x 65 mm (4.13 x 2.56 inches).
Ports and Connectivity
The MSI Thin A15 B7V features a practical, if somewhat unconventionally distributed, array of ports. On the left side, the layout is very simple, containing only the dedicated DC-in power connector and a single USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, which operates at 5Gbps speeds.
The right side of the laptop is where the majority of the connectivity is located. Here you’ll find a Kensington lock slot for physical security and a standard Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) port for wired networking. A versatile USB-C port is also present, offering USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds (up to 10Gbps), DisplayPort Alt Mode for video output, and Power Delivery 3.0. This is accompanied by two additional USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports (5Gbps). A notable and increasingly rare feature is the inclusion of separate 3.5mm jacks for microphone-in and headphone-out, which may be beneficial for users with specific audio equipment.
The rear of the chassis is dedicated solely to a powerful HDMI 2.1 port. This output is capable of driving external displays at high resolutions and refresh rates, such as 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz, making it well-suited for high-end gaming monitors or TVs. While the overall selection is functional, it’s worth noting that all three USB-A ports operate at the base 5Gbps speed.
For wireless communication, the MSI Thin A15 B7V is equipped with a Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) module, providing fast and reliable connections on compatible networks, including access to the less-congested 6 GHz band. This is paired with Bluetooth 5.3 for connecting a wide range of wireless peripherals.
Display and Sound Quality, Display Profiles
There are no display options, you have only one choice – 1080p / 144 Hz. It’s a typical budget gaming panel with low color coverage. On the bright side, it scores high on Eye-Safety wich is appreciated.

Color Coverage
The whole “sail-shaped” map below (Fig. 1) consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.
Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of MSI Thin A15 B7V can show:
Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content.
MSI Thin A15 B7V: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can show.
In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the display at 57% of the sRGB color gamut and 46% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.
(Fig.1) MSI Thin A15 B7V covers 57% of the sRGB gamut
Brightness and Contrast
The maximum brightness in SDR mode is 274 cd/m² in the center of the screen and 260 cd/m² averaged across the surface with a maximum deviation of 12%.
The Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) on a white screen at maximum brightness is 6870K.
The contrast ratio is 1440:1.
Uniformity: Luminance, Contrast, and Color Deviation
The figure below shows the results from our uniformity test across different sections of the screen. It’s measured at 184 nits (Windows slider = 75%) — a brightness level we consider typical for standard working conditions.
DeltaE values below 4.0 are acceptable for regular users. For those working with colors, screens with DeltaE values no higher than 2.0 are recommended.
Color Accuracy
Let’s check the difference between real colors and those you’ll see on the MSI Thin A15 B7V. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the higher the number, the more different they look.
Values below 4.0 are acceptable for regular users, while values below 2.0 are suitable for color-sensitive work. A value below 1.0 means the difference is indistinguishable to the naked eye.
For the next graph, we’ve selected 24 common colors, including dark/light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.
Before our calibration of the MSI Thin A15 B7V, the Average color accuracy was 4.7 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 3.5 dE (Fig. 3). Better, althoug far from ideal.

Visibility in dark scenes
Have you ever watched a movie with dark scenes where you could barely see anything? This often happens because many display panels struggle to differentiate the darkest nuances, making them appear the same.
The next figure illustrates how well the display reproduces these dark nuances. The left side of the image shows the display with stock settings, and the right side shows it with our Gaming and movies profile activated.
On the horizontal axis are the grayscale levels, and on the vertical axis – the corresponding display brightness.
You can also check how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display and the surrounding light conditions.
Response time (Gaming capabilities)
We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.
We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 19.5 ms. Short pixel response time is a prerequisite for a smooth picture in dynamic scenes.
After that, we test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “Gray-to-Gray” method from 50% White to 80% White and vice versa between 10% and 90% of the amplitude.
Health Impact: PWM (Screen flickering)
Some use PWM to regulate their brightness, which means that instead of reducing the light intensity, they pulse or flicker. Our brain merges the image, so it appears darker, but this strains both it and our vision, especially when the frequency of the pulses is low. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.
In the graph below, you see the intensity of light at different brightness levels—on the vertical axis is the brightness of the emitted light, and on the horizontal axis—time.
The light from the backlight of the MSI Thin A15 B7V display is not pulse-width modulated, providing visual comfort in the discussed aspect.
Health Impact: Blue light emissions
Installing our Health-Guard profile reduces harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate.
If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.
Health Impact: Screen Reflectance
Glossy-coated displays can cause eye fatigue in high ambient light conditions due to reflections. We measure the level of screen reflection with the display turned off, at a 60° angle.
The reflectance of the MSI Thin A15 B7V’s screen is 48.1 GU. Very good result!
High Gloss: >70 GU
Medium Gloss: 30 – 70 GU
Low Gloss: <30 GU

Disassembly, Upgrade options, and Maintenance
Getting inside the MSI Thin A15 B7V is not a straightforward task. First, you have to undo twelve bottom screws and work gently around the edges with a plastic tool to release the clips. The hinge side pops last, and there are no hidden fasteners or warranty stickers to worry about.
Cooling is handled by a single blower fan connected to several copper heat pipes that feed a dense fin stack on the right. The VRM areas and the memory slots are covered by low-profile thermal shields, and the heat spreaders around the CPU and GPU share the pipe network to balance loads.
System memory lives in two standard SO-DIMM slots. The platform supports DDR5-4800 and up to 64 GB in dual-channel mode. Our configuration arrived with a two 8 GB SK hynix modules.
For storage, there is one M.2 2280 slot wired to PCIe 4.0 x4. The slot is easy to reach and has a metalized protective label on top. Our unit includes a Micron 2400E 512 GB NVMe drive, which you can replace with a larger Gen4 SSD if you need more space.
The battery is a 52.4 Wh Li-poly pack. It uses a standard board connector plus a few adhesive patches that keep it steady in the tray; once the connector is out, gentle prying along the glued spots is all that’s needed. The pack itself is labeled BTY-M6K and can be replaced without touching other components.
Both speaker boxes are down-firing units tucked into the front corners, each with its own chamber and rubber grommets for isolation. They are held by screws and come out as self-contained modules, which is good news for long-term serviceability.
In short, the Thin A15 B7V offers unnecessary difficult access to two user-replaceable RAM slots, a single PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, a swappable Wi-Fi card, a screw-in audio board, and a replaceable 52.4 Wh battery, with the main upgrade limitation being the presence of only one storage slot.
Verdict
The MSI Thin A15 (B7Vx) is a laptop built on a foundation of significant compromises, a machine that prioritizes portability and price above almost everything else. Its name is a clear statement of intent: this is MSI’s attempt to deliver a gaming experience in a “Thin” and light package. However, this pursuit of a light profile has led to a critical, performance-defining trade-off that potential buyers must fully understand.
This is a budget-friendly, highly portable machine that can certainly play modern games, but it is not a powerhouse. It’s a laptop for the casual gamer who values being able to easily carry their machine around more than they value raw, unthrottled power.
✅ The Good
The standout feature of the Thin A15 is its excellent thermal management. Despite its slim chassis and a cooling solution with only a single fan, it does a remarkable job of keeping both the CPU and GPU at very low temperatures, even during sustained gaming sessions. This leads to great performance stability, with no thermal throttling in sight.
The laptop is also impressively lightweight for a 15-inch gaming machine, making it a genuinely portable option. The display, while visually lackluster, has two critical strengths: it is completely PWM-free and features a very effective low-glare finish, making it exceptionally comfortable for the eyes during long hours of use.
Finally, the inclusion of two (not that) user-accessible SODIMM slots for RAM is a fantastic feature for a budget laptop, offering great long-term value and flexibility. The CPU performance for the price is also very strong.
❌ The Bad
The biggest and most significant drawback is the severely power-limited GPU. To maintain its cool temperatures and slim profile, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 in our unit is restricted to a mere 45W. This results in performance that is significantly lower than a standard RTX 4060, and it is even outperformed by some higher-wattage RTX 4050 models. Buyers must not expect typical RTX 4060 performance from this machine.
The display also suffers from very poor color coverage at just 57% sRGB, making for a dull and washed-out visual experience. The battery life is poor, providing less than 4 hours of use, and the upgrade options are limited by having only a single M.2 slot for storage. The rattling trackpad and lack of a keyboard backlight on some models are further signs of its budget-oriented nature.
🆚 The Competitors
When compared to a rival like the Acer Nitro V 15 ANV15-52 (detailed review), the Thin A15’s critical trade-off is thrown into sharp relief. The Nitro V 15, with its 75W RTX 4050, delivers superior gaming performance despite having a theoretically weaker GPU. The Thin A15 is cooler, but slower.
The choice for a budget-conscious gamer comes down to a clear question. Do you prioritize a lightweight and cool-running machine, or do you want the best possible frame rates for your money? If performance-per-dollar is your main goal, competitors with higher GPU power limits will offer a better gaming experience.
