Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-45) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

The Nitro 5 is the embodiment of sacrificing everything else for the sake of gaming performance. Acer doesn’t spend money on a new shell, using the same design features for a couple of years now.

All of the improvements are on the inside, with Zen 3 and RTX Ampere support. The laptop can come with the most powerful hardware in existence right now, including the Ryzen 9 5900HX and the RTX 3080. Can the laptop however keep up with these components, which will need extensive cooling and airflow in order to reach their potential?

Today we are presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-45).

Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-45): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-45)

1. Input devices

The keyboard here is very good for gaming and typing. It spans the entire keyboard deck, brings a NumPad, along with keycaps that have great size, including the Arrow keys. The unit has good key travel, clicky feedback, and either a Red or a 4-zone RGB backlight. The touchpad has a nice size and is accurate across the entire area.

2. Upgradeability

The upgradeability is also on point, bringing two RAM and two SSD slots. The SODIMM slots can fit up to 64GB of DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode. One of the M.2 slots can fit both PCIe and SATA drives, while the other can only fit PCIe drives. There is an additional 2.5-inch SATA drive bay, with the connectors coming in the box, which is neat from Acer.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access the battery, RAM, and SSD slots.

3. Display quality

While the panel doesn’t have good color coverage or accuracy, it is still great for gaming. The device sports three IPS panels with either 60Hz, 144Hz, or 165Hz. The 165Hz option also has a QHD resolution, while the other two bring Full HD resolution. We reviewed the 144Hz option, which had comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 302 nits in the middle of the screen, and 277 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 14%. The contrast ratio is surprisingly high, at 1490:1.

The color coverage stands at 57% of the sRGB gamut.

The accuracy is also isn’t suitable for professional work, but if you just want to learn the basics of Photoshop or Illustrator, the notebook is a good base to start. The dE value doesn’t go below 3.1 and that is with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right). You can compare it to the stock settings (left).

In terms of ports, you get a total of three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a single USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and HDMI and Ethernet connectors. Sadly, since the laptop uses AMD hardware, you lack Thunderbolt support, while a MicroSD card reader is also missing.
