ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513 – Top 5 Pros and Cons

OLED panels have long been kept only for more premium laptops, but with the technology becoming cheaper and more accessible, we see more affordable OLED laptops pop up, which is fantastic news. OLED displays bring a lot of improvements, because of the way they work.

In IPS displays, the whole panel is backlit, regardless of the color that it displays. OLED panels work differently, with every single LED being individually backlit, thus allowing for some pixels to be truly black or turned off, greatly improving the contrast ratio, and thus the image as a whole.

The ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513 is one of these new affordable laptops with OLED panels, along with new hardware from Intel’s Tiger Lake U-series.

Today we are presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513.

ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513

    1. Design and build quality

Being a VivoBook laptop that is trying to appeal to younger consumers, it has a sleek and minimalist design with a metal lid and a plastic base. Both of them have a matte finish, which should be pretty resistant to fingerprints and smudges. The lid also has the ASUS VivoBook branding, which sits well, being small and non-intrusive. In terms of dimensions, the laptop weighs only 1.70 kg and has a profile of 17.9 mm.

    2. Display quality

With a 15.6-inch Full HD OLED panel, you are set for whatever you want to do. The panel has comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of nearly 400 nits, and fantastic brightness uniformity, which is essential if you want to use the laptop for color-sensitive work. In terms of color coverage, the panel easily reaches 100% sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage.

The dE value, which shows the accuracy, however, didn’t improve a lot even after we applied our Design and Gaming profile, which brought it down from 4.0 to 3.7. Here you can compare the scores of ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513 with the default settings (left), and with the profile (right).

    Office Work

    Design and Gaming

    3. Upgradeability

The laptop brings either 4GB or 8GB of soldered DDR4 memory, along with a single SODIMM RAM slot. Storage-wise, you have one M.2 PCIe x4 slot and space for a 2.5-inch SATA drive, but you have to buy separate connectors and mounting accessories.

Here is our detailed teardown video which shows how to access the single SODIMM RAM slot and the two SSD slots.

    4. Battery life

A 42Wh battery unit is less than we would have hoped for, but for this level of hardware, it is appropriate. The laptop lasts for 9 hours and 16 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 57 minutes of video playback. As with all of our battery tests, we have the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED K513

    1. I/O

The laptop has good I/O coverage, but two out of its three USB Type-A ports run at 2.0 speeds, with the last running at 3.2 speeds. In addition to that, you also have a MicroSD card reader, a 3.5 mm audio jack, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI connector, and a power plug.
