HP Pavilion Gaming 15 (15-dk2000): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 (15-dk2000)

1. Display quality

Starting off with a surprise, it’s rare when a budget gaming device suddenly also sports some Creator qualities to it. The display on the Pavilion Gaming 15 does exactly that by offering a Full HD IPS panel with comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 285 nits in the middle of the screen, 273 nits average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 10%. The contrast ratio is also decent – 1260:1.

In terms of color coverage, the panel covers 90% of the sRGB color gamut. It also uses aggressive PWM to adjust brightness, which works at all brightness levels. Our Health-Guard profile fixes the issue entirely, but you shouldn’t have to go out of your way, in order to have a pleasant experience using a laptop.

The display has poor color accuracy with the factory settings, reaching a dE value of 5.1, which goes down to 2.6 after we applied our Design and Gaming profile.

Office Work

2. I/O

The laptop has a decent amount of ports with three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a single USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI 2.0 port, an Ethernet port, an SD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

3. Input devices

The glorious Black + Green color scheme finds its way to us again, in the face of a great keyboard and touchpad. The former, while having green painted keycaps, also has a green backlight, to compliment the long key travel and clicky feedback. The touchpad has a plastic surface, which is smooth and offers decent responsiveness.

4. Upgradeability

Being a gaming notebook, you get great upgradeability, with the device offering two SODIMM RAM slots, an M.2 PCIe x4 slot, and space for a 2.5-inch SATA drive.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access both the memory and storage slots.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 (15-dk2000)

1. CPU performance

The device that we tested was equipped with a Core i7-11370H, which is a CPU that is capped at 35W, which is a questionable decision. When compared to other gaming laptops with the Tiger Lake H45 architecture, which has 10W of extra headroom and more cores, you can see the wild performance difference.
