Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the ASUS VivoBook 17 X712

Sometimes an inexpensive device with a large screen is just what you need. Setting it up on a table while you’re chilling on the couch and enjoying some of your favorite movies or series will be great, especially with the VivoBook 17 X712, which comes with said 17.3-inch display, along with decent specs, which allow it to do stuff other than play media.

The VivoBook brand has always targeted the younger audience and this is probably the best laptop for the job. Today we are presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the ASUS VivoBook 17 X712.

ASUS VivoBook 17 X712: Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the ASUS VivoBook 17 X712

1. Upgradeability

The laptop has half of its memory soldered onto the motherboard, while also offering a single SODIMM slot. Storage-wise, the laptop gets a single M.2 PCIe x4 slot and a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay, but ASUS doesn’t provide the mounting hardware.

Here is our teardown video which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

2. I/O

The I/O isn’t perfect at all but offers wide coverage, including a total of three USB Type-A ports, with two 2.0 ports and one 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI connector, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

3. Display

In terms of displays, the laptop offers three 17.3-inch options. The first two use a TN panel and come with a resolution of either 1600 x 900p or 1920 x 1080p. The last display keeps the Full HD resolution but uses an IPS panel. The laptop that we reviewed came with the first option. It brought narrow viewing angles, which is standard for TN panels, a max brightness of 294 nits in the middle of the screen, 262 nits average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 14%, and a mediocre contrast ratio of 290:1. In terms of color coverage, the display covers 71% of the sRGB color gamut.

The color accuracy was affected in a good way when we applied our Design and Gaming profile, but it still wasn’t suitable for color-sensitive work. Here are the results with the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work

2 reasons NOT to buy the ASUS VivoBook 17 X712

1. Design and build quality

Being an affordable device, build materials and quality aren’t big priorities. With that said, the VivoBook offers a plastic exterior that looks great but isn’t as rigid as we would have hoped. Both the chassis and the lid twist easily, with the latter being unable to be opened with one hand. The bezels around the display are slim, with the top one housing the HD Webcam. In terms of dimensions, the laptop weighs 2.30 kg and has a profile of 19.9 mm. The lid uses ErgoLift, which lifts up the rear of the base, giving the fans more room to breathe.

2. Battery life

The laptop has a laughable battery unit of 32Wh. To no surprise, it lasts for only 7 hours and 2 minutes of Web browsing, and 5 hours and 3 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.
