First impressions of Dell Inspiron 7559 – is this the best gaming deal on the market?

laptop-inspiron-15-7000-pdp-polaris-03When Amazon launched the new Dell Inspiron 7559, we were greatly surprised by its price. We even came across some forum posts of users asking whether that’s the real price and if there was something wrong with the notebook. It turns out that Dell just wants to step into the “mainstream” gaming market with a great hit. It’s the same story as with Acer and its Nitro line, which paved the way to the high-end segment, where, at the moment, the Acer Predator line has some of the most lucrative offerings. Meanwhile in the affordable category, HP launched its Pavilion 15 Gaming, ASUS refreshed its GL and G lines and Lenovo updated its iconic Y series.

Back to the Inspiron, the new 7559 (15 7000) is already with us, awaiting the in-depth tests. But before we get to them, we’ll share our first impressions of this machine.

Design

laptop-vostro-15-3000-pdp-polaris-04-blackContrary to most of the gaming laptops out there, this time around we have simple looks and less aggressive lines. Were it not for the red elements, no one would have guessed that we’re looking at a gaming line. The lid is covered with matte rubber, and there is a red DELL logo in the center. The palm rest has the same coating, which fortunately doesn’t get smudges and fingerprints.

The interior is pretty elegant and even the keyboard backlight is white – rather uncommon in laptops for gamers. The grill that covers the speakers and the outlines of the trackpad are the main red elements. However, the most important thing here is that the construction seems sturdy and doesn’t bend under light pressure. It’s not match for some of the aluminum competitors, but given the price tag, we’re more than happy with the build quality.

Hardware

Okay, Inspiron 7559 isn’t top-notch in terms of performance, but as we already said, it’s a great deal for the asking price. It has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M GPU, which is enough for smooth gaming at medium to high settings in many games (we’ll check that in details in our review). The processor in our unit is Intel Core i5-6300HQ (Skylake), but you can also find the notebook with Core i7-6700HQ.

In our opinion, if you’re not planning on working with Photoshop, Premiere or other CPU intensive software, and you’re just looking for the best gaming notebook at a given price, don’t spend the extra money on the i7 version. Core i5-6300HQ shouldn’t be a bottleneck and you’ll save around $200. On the other hand, if you need a mix of a gaming machine and a workstation, the more expensive configuration is worth considering.

Battery life and portability

If you’re looking for a laptop to bring with you everywhere, keep in mind that Inspiron 7559’s weight startled us a bit. The notebook weighs 2.6kg, which is around 10-15% more than the average 15-incher.

On the bright side, it has a big 74Wh battery and as we said earlier – rigid construction. Add to the equation the Full HD IPS display, the sophisticated thermal cooling design with two cooling fans/three exhausts, and the 2+1 audio system with stereo speakers and subwoofer, and you’ll start warming up to that 2.6 kg.

We have high expectations across the board, but let us first put Dell Inspiron 7559 to the test, and then we’ll share our verdict. Meanwhile, don’t hesitate to share your opinion in the comments system and if you want us to test something specific, just let us know.
