ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702) review – is there a future for foldables?

Design and construction

So, what makes this notebook special? Well, it consists of a couple of things – a foldable display, a magical hinge, a magnesium body, and a faux leather back cover and kickstand.

Naturally, if you want to use the machine in the so-called “desktop” mode, you need to pop the back stand. It has only one stable position, but it offers a pretty comfortable angle. When the display is fully open, you will be able to see a crease. In fact, there are two of them. They are intentional and prevent the foldable display from cracking when you fold it up.

In terms of dimensions, the laptop sits at 8.7-12.9mm in desktop mode and 17.4-34.4mm in a folded position. In simple words, this means that the device is super thin when unfolded, and super thick when folded.

The 5MP AI Web camera is placed on the left side, which becomes the top side when you use it as a laptop. Besides the camera, there is an IR face recognition sensor, as well as proximity, and light temperature scanners.

This machine’s keyboard is pretty good. It has decent key travel and somewhat clicky feedback. The touchpad is a bit small, but we are impressed by the low latency. It attaches magnetically to the Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702). To connect it for the first time, however, you need to long-press the Bluetooth button on the keyboard, and then discover it through the Bluetooth settings on your device.

So, testing the durability of this machine is a bit difficult, because we don’t really want to break it. With that said, the entire body has some flex in desktop mode, while it holds really well when used as a laptop. Still, don’t try to bend the display to the other side, because it feels like it wants to give.

The keyboard is a bit too flexy, though. With its 300 grams of weight, the total for the entire system becomes 1.80, which is still pretty bearable. However, if your main use case is as a laptop, this would be one very uncomfortable 12.5-incher.

It’s good to see that the sound system has not been sacrificed at all. There are four stereo speakers with two on either side of the machine. A heat exhaust has been put in the top left part of the device.

Ports

Well, the port selection here is quite scarce. There are two Thunderbolt 4 connectors – one on the left, and one on the top (in “desktop” mode). In addition, there is an Audio jack right next to the top Thunderbolt 4 port.
