HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000) review – it is pretty good but can’t match its direct competitors

HP’s Omen series is one of the older gaming notebook brands on the market. However, despite the redesign that happened 3 years ago, we haven’t seen much action from HP. This leaves a huge chunk of market share to direct competitors Lenovo and ASUS.

Not that the Omen notebooks of recent years have been flops. They just lack innovation. Today, we are going to check out the HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000). It is the company’s latest effort in the gaming market.

You can find the machine equipped with a Core i9-13900HX – a 55W base TDP CPU, which has the potential to take on an army. At the same time, the graphics options are no less impressive. The roster features GPUs like the RTX 4080 (175W) and RTX 4090. It would be really interesting to see if the laptop can sustain the high TGP of the RTX 4080.

In addition to that, you can choose from a bunch of fast displays. There is one 1080p unit with a 144Hz refresh rate, which is joined by two 1440p screens – one with 165Hz, and one with 240Hz refresh rates. All of them have IPS panels, and HP promises full sRGB color coverage, which is great.

    What’s in the box?

Inside the package, you get some paperwork, as well as a funny-looking 330W charger. It is quite big. In fact, we asked a bunch of people what they think this is, and some answers we got were “router” and an exquisite “Mac Mini”.

I bought this laptop and I’m disappointed for the price I paid. I instantly upgraded the ram, but my research said gen 13 i7 only supports up to 4800 ram. I9 will do 5200 and maybe higher. But what I’m most disappointed at is the bios has almost no features. I’m not talking about overclocking. At boot, if you hit ESC and wait for the bios text, then his win+A, you can get into advanced bios, which is just the ability to view ram timing. You can under clock the ram. That’s their idea of boosting performance. All I want… Read more »

But how was the general performance itself? The frames, etc. And the heating too, how are thermals

Yeah, the BIOS on most laptops are a joke, but this one takes it to a whole new level. The most barebones I have ever seen. They have this laptop locked down hard.
