Display Profiles for LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B – Excellent for Gaming with Vivid Colors

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B offers a very detailed QHD IPS panel with a 165Hz refresh rate. Through the settings, you can utilize display overdrive to overlock the panel to 180Hz, however, you’d have to be careful not to introduce visual artifacts and inverse ghosting, which can happen when overclocking a monitor. If it were up to us, we’d keep the panel running at 165Hz, as it’s still plenty fast. Thanks to the 1ms Grey to Grey response time, you get a high-quality experience when playing esports titles, as these games require very fast reaction times so a monitor that displays frames as quickly as possible will give you an advantage. There’s also FreeSync and G-Sync support, so there’d be no screen tearing in almost any game.

There are other settings inside to help with your gaming, like the Black Stabilizer, which makes things more visible when you enter a dark environment in a game.

You can also permanently fixate a crosshair in the middle of the monitor for better aim, as usually, crosshairs in shooters move around to mimic recoil, so you literally can’t shoot straight.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, and digital cinema, and photo editing
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 100% of the sRGB gamut and 99% of the DCI-P3 gamut, so you get even more colors.

(Fig.1) LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B covers 100% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the LG UltraGear 24GN60R-B. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before we calibrated the LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B,  the Average color accuracy was 3.9 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowers to 2.5 dE (Fig. 3), which is a 1.5x increase in accuracy. Unfortunately, the dE value isn’t below 2.0 even after calibration, so we wouldn’t deem it suitable for professional color-sensitive work. However, just for gaming, it won’t matter if some colors are slightly off, as it will make the images pop more to give you a better visual experience.

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

While not the most color-accurate monitor, the LG UltraGear 27GP850P-B compensates for that by having a lot of other features. Also keep in mind that while the accuracy is slightly off, the color coverage is still very impressive, as the 98% DCI-P3 coverage makes for an amazing image, so movies and games certainly look life-like and very detailed.

Moving away from the perspective of the designer, the adjustable stand is great to use, so you can customize your setup and make it feel as ergonomic as you like it to be. The addition of a USB hub is also very helpful, giving you two extra ports to plug in whatever you want. You can charge devices from them, connect additional peripherals, and reduce overall clutter on your desk.

Lastly, the gaming capabilities of the monitor are great, thanks to the G-Sync support and the overclockable refresh rate (the monitor can go as high as 180Hz) that’s paired with a quick 1ms grey to grey response time. While a bit pricier, it still offers value, and our display profiles can only help it be better, regardless of what you’re doing on it, be it gaming, watching movies, or handling office-related tasks from home. They are super easy to use, as we have an app that allows you to switch between them with just a mouse click.

Where’s the pixel response time tests? Pretty gross to call this a review. More like an Ad for your lame profiles.

First, you’re right – we did focus this article on showcasing our profiles. However, we also included an overview of its Specs, Box contents, Drivers, some words about its Design, Features recap, Color coverage report, Color accuracy report, and Verdict. That said, you’ve got a point – Our audience, tech enthusiasts like yourself, often seek more in-depth analysis, like the other ones you’ve used to read on LaptopMedia. That’s why we had a discussion here and decided to take… Read more »
