Acer Aspire 3 (A315-56) vs Acer Aspire 3 (A315-55G) – a 10th gen CPU upgrade while the rest is almost the same
The Acer Aspire 3 series is “all about the price (money)”. Everybody loves to read about great gaming machines with big displays and fast hardware but most of the time a lot of us end up buying a normal device for home usage or for work. That’s why the low-to-mid-range devices are much more popular than most of the shiny and expensive laptops.
With that said, the new Acer Aspire 3 (A315-56) is a device that will not draw too much attention. This is mainly because of its rather boring look, plastic body, and TN display, but at the end of the day, a lot of people are buying these machines because of their modest price tag. It’ll not inspire its owners but it’ll do the job at home or in the office.
Ok, let’s see what the newer one (A315-56) has to offer over the A315-55G laptop.

Design: a repetitive look
Apart from the slightly different lid and hinge design, there is nothing new here. The same “old” all-plastic build with decently sized bezels (not the thinnest but we’ve seen a lot worst). Acer’s decision not to go wild with a new design is certainly keeping the price down. No changes in terms of thickness and weight – 19.9mm in profile (just 0.1mm thinner than the older model) and 1.9 kg of weight.

Display: TN for the masses
Almost any low-priced laptop comes with a TN panel and this one is no exception. Like its predecessor, it also has a 15.6″ TN panel with a Full HD resolution. We have e review of the previous-gen notebook and the panel has bad viewing angles and poor sRGB coverage – typical for a display like that. At least it has fast response time which is good for games, although this is not a gaming machine.

Hardware: 4-core Ice Lake CPU under the hood
At least for now, the Acer Aspire 3 (A315-56) comes with the Intel Core i5-1035G1 which is good because it’s a fast 10th gen Ice lake processor with a 10nm node, which helps it use less power. Since there is no dedicated GPU option announced yet, there is only the UHD G1 integrated graphics, you can rely on. It should be good enough for some light games or a high-quality movie. It’s good to see that Acer is going for an Ice Lake CPU even in their budget class notebooks.
The I/O: the bare minimum
The I/O isn’t rich in ports. There are two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-A) port, an HDMI connector, an Ethernet port, and an audio jack. Yep, the bare minimum.
Other specs: Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2
Well, you’ll be “stuck” with the standard Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 – you can’t really ask for more (probably) in this price range. The keyboard unit is the same, and for now, we don’t have info about the battery capacity but Acer said that it’s a 2-cell unit with 8 hours of battery life.
