Intel Core i5-1035G1 vs i5-8265U – almost the same CPU performance but the Ice Lake CPU has better iGPU

A comparison between two generations of Core i5 CPUs would be a good idea. The time has come and we can compare the Core i5-1035G1 and i5-8265U. Ice Lake vs Whiskey Lake.

Both CPUs look almost the same on paper but let’s see what the new 10nm tech can offer over the 14nm architecture.

Quick Specs

The bulk prices are equal – $297.00. This is an easy job – the faster one is the better choice because of its price.

The two rivals have 4 cores and 8 threads and the same cache size – 6MB.

The Core i5-1035G1 is equipped with the newer Intel UHD G1 and the i7-8565U has the “good old” UHD 620. The i5-1035G1 has a bit lower base frequency (1.00 GHz to 1.60 GHz) and lower boost one too (3.60 GHz to 3.90 GHz) than i5-8265U. The memory supported frequencies are on the side of the newer CPU – DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733 and DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133 for i5-8265U.

The Core i5-1035G1 iGPU is Intel UHD G1 and i5-8265U has Intel UHD 620.

CPU Benchmarks

Both CPUs are almost neck-a-neck here – 2% lead for the Whiskey Lake CPU.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Benchmarks

Bad news for the i5-8265U/UHD 620 combo here – Core i5-1035G1 and UHD G1 combination is 25% faster.

Results are from the 3DMark: Time Spy (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the 3DMark: Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the Unigine Superposition benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Verdict

A very clear result – Core i5-1035G1 is the better choice because of it faster iGPU and the Ice Lake CPU cost the same as i5-8265U. Both CPUs are fast but if you want to play some light games like CS:GO or DOTA 2 the gameplay with the UHD 620 will be not that smooth while UHD G1 will offer better frame times.

December is a month full of deals and if you find a good deal of a laptop with the i5-8265U (and you don’t care about the graphics performance) it will be a decent choice for your daily needs. If the prices are close, the Core i5-1035G1 is the right choice.
