NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (130W) vs RTX 3070 (85W) – higher performance or lower power consumption?
Like every new year, there are new green video cards on the market. This time it’s the Ampere generation and we are going to show you the TGP versions of the GeForce RTX 3070. The latter can be found as an 85W, 95W, or 130W product.
The GeForce RTX 3070 comes with more power under the hood – it looks like a much more capable chip compared to its predecessor – the GeForce RTX 2070. The new one comes with more CUDA core and higher ROP count and that’s why it’s able to outscore the old Turing GPU with ease.
Today we are going to check what the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (130W) and RTX 3070 (85W) are capable of. It’ll be a battle between the bigger GeForce RTX 3070 versus the smallest of all three – the RTX 3070 (85W).

GeForce RTX 3070 variants
As we already informed you, the GeForce RTX 3070 is available in three different TGP levels – 85W, 95W, and 130W. The differences between them are power limits and clocks. This leads us to the specs – GeForce RTX 3070 (85W) offers 780 MHz/1290 MHz base and boost clock, and 1500 MHz for the memory.
In addition to that, the 130W graphics card is expectedly clocked higher compared to its smaller sibling. We have 1110 MHz/1620 MHz for the core and the memory clock is also higher – 1750 MHz.
These GPUs share similar specs like the same memory bus, memory type, ROP count, CUDAs, etc.

Verdict
This is not a surprise that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (130W) is faster compared to the 85W version. The main question is how big is the lead of the 130W graphics card. Well, in most cases, the performance gap between the two rivals is between 15% and 20% (and even more).
It’s not bad at all, but if you want your laptop to be light and compact, the GeForce RTX 3070 (85W) is the logical choice because it has a smaller TGP that leads to lesser heat dissipation and lower power consumption. On the other hand, if pure performance is what matters the most for you then the GeForce RTX 3070 (130W) is the right graphics card for you (if your wallet is wide enough).
