Snapdragon 430 (+Adreno 505) vs Helio P10 (+Mali-T860) – performance, benchmarks and temperatures

Snapdragon 430 and Helio P10 are two of the popular mobile chips developed by Qualcomm and MediaTek. Both of them are mid-range processors and there are a great many smartphones on the market making use of these chips. It is namely for this reason that a comparison of the two would be quite intriguing. We would like to first have a look at their specifications and then juxtapose their results from various benchmarks, and conclude with surface overheating tests. For the purposes of this comparative article we have made use of the Lenovo K6 and Moto M operating with Snapdragon 430 and Helio P10.

The first smartphones using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 MSM8952 hit the market in the second half of the last year. Lenovo K6 is the first device with this chipset that we have tested. Snapdragon 430 is a 64-bit mobile processor built on the 28nm process technology. The CPU has eight Cortex-A53 cores with a maximum frequency of 1.4GHz. It’s specs include Full HD display support, up to 21MP camera sensors with up to Full HD video capturing (30fps), Quick Charge 3.0 technology for faster recharging ( 38% more effective than Quick Charge 2.0), Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and LTE Cat 4 with download speeds of up to 150Mbps. The chip also includes the Adreno 505 graphics card which brings a major step up in graphics capabilities compared to its predecessor.
You can find more information about the Snapdragon 430 at Qualcomm’s official web page: https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/430
On the other side of the ring is Moto M, which features a MediaTek MT6755 Helio P10 mobile chip. It is 64-bit and built on a 28nm node. MediaTek promises up to 30% better energy efficiency than other chips using a 28nm technology. The mobile processor includes eight Cortex-A53 cores, running at a clock speed of up to 1.81GHz. Helio P10 supports Full HD displays as well as MiraVision 2.0, UltraDimming and BluLight Defender technologies. Also found here is LTE Cat 6 connectivity which will lead to higher connection speeds. The chip works with up to 21MP cameras and allows recording of Full HD video. The present GPU is Mali-T860, running at frequencies of 700MHz.

Benchmark results
The two SoCs offer smooth operation but we are definitely curious to draw some parallels between them. To do this, we performed several benchmarks testing both computing (first two tests) and graphics power (last four tests). As you may see, the results are displayed in the table below.
| Benchmarks | MediaTek Helio P10 | Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 |
|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 3 (Multi-Core) | 2836 (+14%) | 2478 |
| Vellamo 3 Metal | 1245 (+17%) | 1065 |
| GFXBench 2.7 T-Rex (offscreen) | 17 (+6%) | 16 |
| GFXBench 3 Manhattan (offscreen) | 7.1 | 7.1 |
| GFXBench 3.1 Manhattan (offscreen) | 4.7 (+7%) | 4.4 |
| 3D Mark Ice Unlimited | 11084 (+16%) | 9581 |
External temperatures
As it was mentioned above, we can’t go without comparing surface temperatures after a continuous 3D gaming load. It is important to note that the measured maximum temperature values on a smartphone’s back depend not only on the performance of the chip inside. In the particular case, Moto M is one of the models with Helio P10 which offers low external temperatures after load. This is not the case with the Sony Xperia XA, though, which also makes use of the Helio P10. In our case, however, we are discussing Lenovo K6 and Moto M, and the results show that after a continuous gaming session, simulated with the help of the Epic Citadel app, the two devices perform in a similar fashion and there are no reasons for us to worry.
