NVIDIA’s new Max-Q Design will bring all the high-end GPUs to very thin and light notebooks
NVIDIA is the company that transforms mobile gaming the most. With their latest generation of graphics processors based on the Pascal architecture, you practically get the same experience on both desktop and notebook. However, gaming notebooks may be powerful but are also heavy and thick and large which can be a letdown. Now NVIDIA is taking the next step to perfecting the mobile gaming station by unveiling their new Max-Q Design.

The company’s CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the new Max-Q Design at a keynote at Computex 2017. He claims that this new design can be used to create gaming notebooks “3x thinner with 3x more performance than previous generations”. The idea is to equip ultra-thin devices with top-notch hardware like the GeForce GTX 1080 GPU.
“For the first time ever, all GeForce GTX GPUs are available in laptops as thin as 18mm” adds Jensen Huang. And ASUS just unveiled the 17.9mm-thick GTX 1080-equipped ROG Zephyrus to back this statement up.

The company also revealed WhisperMode which is a new mode to boost the efficiency of the notebook and making it run very quiet when plugged-in. This is done by “intelligently pacing the game’s frame rate while simultaneously configuring the graphics settings for optimal power efficiency”. How does it actually do that is not really our business but if the notebook runs silent and for hours than most gamers will be happy. WhisperMode will be available to all Pascal-based GPUs via a software update which means that you will get to try it out even if you don’t have one of those new Max-Q designed notebooks.
We are happy to see how the mobile gaming world is evolving into something better with every passing month. With AMD back in the game with their Ryzen and Vega CPUs and GPUs, we can expect even more innovations.
