First impressions on the new water-resistant Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

We’re planning to make a full review of Sony Xperia M4 Aqua but for now we can only share our first impression on it. Maybe the first thing we should mention is the model’s dust and water resistance, hinted by its name. It has an IP68 certificate, meaning you can use it in less than 1.5 m of water for up to 30 minutes. A pleasant addition is the physical button for taking pictures, which allows you shoot under water.

Design-wise Sony kept it elegantly. You can notice the shiny back, silver side parts and thickness of only 7.3 mm. It’s an “unibody” design and in order to insert a SIM or microSD card you’ll have to open the indicated caps.

We were satisfied with menus and browsing. Everything runs smoothly without any kind of lag. After all the performance is provided by a Snapdragon 615 processor, which has 4x Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.00 GHz and 4x Cortex-A57 cores at 1.7GHz. The first benchmark tests we did recorded high results. In charge of the graphics performance is Adreno 405, so we didn’t have any problems with the games. The thing that disappointed us was the rapid overheating in the camera area. Of course, we will also run a temperature test in which we’ll measure the heat levels after heavier usage.

One of the main secret weapons of the model is the 13MP back camera equipped with LED flash. Some of the test photos we made look pretty good and you will see them soon in another post. More detailed tests will be included in the upcoming review.

We can’t say much about the 2400 mAh battery yet, but we noticed different modes for extending its life and information about the energy consumption of each application. According to Sony, the battery will last 2 days but that’s dependent, so wait and see the results of our tests.

The software is another key component of Xperia M4 Aqua. It consists of Android 5.0 Lollipop OS and user interface by Sony that includes some pre-installed applications, modes and functionalities, that again will be discussed in our review.

Nowadays 8GB memory comes as insufficient, especially when half of it is taken by the software. That’s the case in Xperia M4 Aqua, but we’re going to mark it as a small disadvantage because there is a microSD slot. So if you don’t have any trouble adding a memory card, you won’t be affected by the small amount of internal memory.
