Dell Latitude 14 9420 (2-in-1): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Dell Latitude 14 9420 (2-in-1)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop has an aluminum body that is very well built and looks very good. It is constructed using a single block of aluminum, using CNC milling to shape up the outside and inside. You get a matte finish on the lid, with diamond-cut edges. The laptop is quite sturdy, showing little to no flex, when twisted. The laptop is very portable, stopping the scales at 1.40 kg while being only 13.9 mm tall.

The lid opens easily with a single hand, despite this being a convertible. This is what happens when you use stable 360° hinges, which operate smoothly. This reveals a glass-covered display with thin bezels, of which the top one houses an HD camera, an IR face recognition sensor, and a proximity sensor, which can wake up and put the notebook to sleep when you get close to it.

2. Display quality

The laptop offers two 14-inch displays, both with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The first one has an FHD+ resolution, while the second one bumps that up to QHD+. Our laptop had the QHD panel, which had excellent viewing angles, a max brightness of 524 nits in the center of the screen, 495 nits as an average for the entire display area, and a maximum deviation of 10%. The contrast ratio is quite high, sitting at 1650:1.

The laptop covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut.

The color accuracy was pretty off with the factory settings, but once we applied our Design and Gaming profile, we got a dE value of 1.5, which is close to the standard.

Here are the results of our test with both the factory settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

3. I/O

The laptop has a decently wide I/O, with a lot of ports, that are split between the left and right sides. the left side houses a lock slot, an HDMI connector, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MicroSD card slot, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. On the right side, you have one USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port and some WWAN antennas, as the laptop has 5G support.

4. Input devices

Being a device that costs more than $2000, the keyboard and touchpad combo is fantastic. The keyboard has large keycaps, except for the arrow keys, along with long key travel and clicky feedback. The touchpad, which is quite large and has a glass cover, offers smooth gliding and accurate tracking. Unfortunately, we noticed a slight deck flex, but nothing out of the ordinary.

1 reason NOT to buy the Dell Latitude 14 9420 (2-in-1)

1. Upgradeability

One of the shortcomings of this laptop is the lack of memory upgradeability. The RAM is soldered onto the motherboard and while the laptop is configurable with up to 32GB of RAM, it can get eaten up if you use the laptop to its full potential. For storage, there is one M.2 PCIe x4 drive, however, the device limits you to 30mm drives.
