An Apple patent describes how the front-facing camera, ambient light sensor and proximity sensors found in existing iPhones could be used for health-related measurements.

One or more of the camera and proximity sensors emit light into a user’s body part touching the surface of the electronic device and one or more of the camera, the ambient light and proximity sensors receive at least part of the emitted light reflected by the body part. In this way user’s health data is computed.

Also considered is the use of additional sensors for even more various measurements such as body fat measurement or an electrocardiogram (ECG) reading.

The total number of health indicators that can be monitored is impressive. What is interesting, though, is that for capturing data such as pulse, blood pressure index and oxygen saturation nothing more than the camera and light sensor are needed. However, the patent notes that more sophisticated ones may be required for optimal use.

As it is often the case with Apple patents, we cannot be 100% sure which ones will be chosen for the real product but one thing is certain – the world-renowned company is definitely interested in the healthcare field.
